It is the bar or beam that is on top of an entryway or door.

I'm at the point where I need to find the coffer. I have the key and am looking on both sides of the open cabinet. But I don't get any type of gear symbol nor can I go to either side of the cabinet. I have talked to the magician and he told Maya about the key on the table which is in inventory. I just need to find the coffer. And why can't I get on either side of the cabinet?

Use key on coffer on the floor beside the open cabinet.

Look down on the floor and see a coffer-chest.
