I often go for a combination of spellcaster/thief, spellcaster/fighter or archer/thief. I rarely play straight tanks; I like my characters to be versatile, though I will play a pure spellcaster from time to time.
I think I'm quite ready for another adventure.

I usually prefer the pure mage.

I most often played a support job such as a mage, while one of my sons prefers to be a damage dealer. My sons reasoning is that he can and I quote "choose 'attack', go make a sam'mich, come back and be ready for the next go around" this without worrying about others on his team for the most part, while I prefer the support jobs and the need to pay attention to all the party members. Now my son really did pay attention to the other party members but that is a good way of explaining the basic difference.

Generally, I choose a "goodie" type of Knight or Paladin because I enjoy wielding a sword - but I like it best when I am allowed to use a little archery AND magic as well I always play as a male, though, despite being female myself

I like to play archers and snipers and sneak around instead of running up waving my sword but I try to at least be decent at swordplay. I also love to dabble in magic but I have yet to play a totally magic character. I always play a female if I can even if there's a disadvantage. Generally I play good with sticky fingers.
It's hard for me to play evil in the real game but I will play evil now and then from a save if I want to see how the game handles it and then go back to my good game.

I usually make my hero more as an archer since it gets the work done easily if your shot is good but also learn melee weapons in case your shot goes bad and some magic for fun. In fable and oblivion the headshot would do the trick but in gothic it's different so it hard to be an archer. Unfortunately you can't be an archer in 'the witcher' but I still love that game.

My favourite Gothic character is an archer/mage/thief type -- but you're right, it's very difficult at lower levels; playing that build entails a lot of bravely running away and healing and hiding behind things and making cowardly atacks from high perches. But at higher levels...whee! Not for the novice player, though.
I think I'm quite ready for another adventure.

Most RPG's almost demand that you start with sword skills. I can't imagine starting a game like Morrowind without having rudimentary longsword skills (falling cows notwithstanding).

I always, always, ALWAYS play a Warrior class primarily in any RPG. Mainly just because that's what I'm best at, and I don't really enjoy playing anything else.
I'm no good at hybrids, and attacking from distance isn't my thing.

Hmmm if we are talking about console or PC RPG's then I run the gambit from your typical warrior to pure rain down fire from the heavens Mages . . . however if we are talking about D&D or another similar pen and paper game I really prefer being something with more versatility, such as a Druid or Cleric . . . magick most definetly, but can get up good and close and throw some blows when needed . . .
I remember my favorite "character" from BGII/ToB being a Dual Classed Kensai/Mage . . . took about 7 levels in Kensai and the rest in Mage . . . man she was awesome . . . did not matter whether I stood back and nuked with Fireball or ran in and sliced and diced with my dual katana, death to evil was the end result either way!

Hm...Dual-class Kensai/Mage sounds interesting. I might have to try that combination next time I load up BG2.
I think I'm quite ready for another adventure.

It is a very powerful class to be sure Hagatha once you catch your mage levels up to the Kensai levels to where you get the full benefit of both classes . . . I certainly had the most fun with that character, although the time I managed to use quivering palm on a red dragon successfully was really neat too . . . ahh all this talk of BG makes me want to install and play again!

. . . ahh all this talk of BG makes me want to install and play again! Me, too -- and I still have a game of BG 2 waiting to be finished already, with a hugely powerful Dual classed Fighter/Mage. But I got badly sidetracked by Deus Ex. I'm trying to force myself to choose different augmentations this time, but I can't seem to give up the Sneaking/Thieving options. I guess I'm just not psychologically cut out to play the One Man Army (a.k.a. Fighter)version of Deus Ex. I wouldn't know how to begin to play the game that way. And yet, I would love to know what it's like to have high-level melee skills (for that big sword) and to be able to leap tall buildings at a single bound, and to use Big Guns instead of the silenced Sniper Rifle. I just...can't do it, game after game. I'm still sneaking around knocking out the the so-called terrorist NSF, reloading if one of them dies by mistake. I guess I'm just a sneak-thief at heart.

I think it is funny how often our choices while gaming remain consistent even when we intend to change them. Last night hubby and son discovered that they made identical Paladin's for a MMORPG even though they made them at separate times. Talk about genes coming through

Paladins are insanely fun to play, especially when just fighting monsters. It's like all the fun of heavy melee fighters without the dying part.

Okay, I made a really radical choice last night and decided to forego Run Silent in favour of the Speed option, which will allow JC to run and jump instead of sneaking. Repeat: no sneaking!
I think I'm quite ready for another adventure.
