I like semi-linear. I appreciate the games that let you roam around a decent sized area where you can do things out of order, but still need to complete a section before you can move on. Ana

Ditto what Becky said. Although I think Culpa did an excellent job of simultaneously telling a great story and using nonlinear game play. So it depends on the game, really.

I agree that is hard decision, But I really love the freedom of non linear, different endings depending on the choices I make. However what Ana says is also a fun way like in the game Lost Crown, we couldn't leave an area until we were done, and the designer let us know that fact.

I enjoy non-linear if the game is logical and I know where I need to go and what I'm supposed to be doing in the order that I choose to do it. If I'm wandering around like a plum pudding in a trance, then it gets stale quite quickly. Sometimes it's just as much fun to play linearly, there's not quite so much headscratching involved.

I prefer non-linear with most 3rd person dialogue /inventory games. That way you are limited in how much you have to try every item on everyone and everything, as well as repeating endless dialogues. In solitary exploration games - Dark Fall, Rhem, Myst, etc. - non-linear is what I like, so when you are stumped with something, you can explore and work on puzzles somewhere else.

I prefer linear; I like knowing that if I can't move on in the game, I've missed something, so I just go back and retrace my steps. Non-linear games leave me feeling totally lost, not knowing what, or where, I'm supposed to be doing or going.
The answer is....chocolate! Who cares what the question is.....

I too enjoy the freedom of full exploration and alternative puzzle solutions etc etc - but I also like it if I'm NOT allowed to start a next chapter until I have accomplished all I should in a current one. Helps to eradicate some of those dreaded "dead ends"
