Any help appreciated, Im stuck at end of lane Arae 1, unable to make bushcutter cut down bushes so as to gain access to the old garage. I've been over the steps previously as per walkthrough but I guess I've missed something.

Be sure that you click on the bushes first and he will make a comment about needing to remove the bushes.
I presume you have the bushcutter with fuel already and ready to go?
Then after he says that about the bushes - use the bushcutter.

Hi Thanks for the reply. Firstly I have got bushcutter fuelled and in inventory and secondly yes I have clicked on bushes first and I see a sort of gear- like symbol, but as to anybody saying anything I havent heard anything except the original phone messages all game. Have I missed doing something in sequence or have I a glitch?

As the game allowed you to fuel and pick up the bushcutter, you should be good to go with cutting down the bushes. So when you take the bushcutter out of inventory and click it onto the gear symbol over the bushes, nothing happens? Are you close enough to a saved game at the point where you first examined the bushes, that you can go back and replay this part through again? Sometimes a replay will shake something loose.
