I must be a bit dim as im at the start of the game and im already stuck, i cant find finley sweeping up.

In first person mode, turn left out of the Police Station, continue for a few yards, turn left into Commercial Road and left again into first alley and left again into the boarding house yard, he's here on your right. Am lovin this game mainly because there are no dead-ends, hints like....

I found him but now im at the captain who is lying in street watson is supposed to diagnose him as having a month to live im still in sherlock mode and he has nothing to say.

Captain:
You should have a request from Finley to do something about him.
Talk to Policeman at station about captain.
Talk to niece about him.
Talk to young boy to ID and know where he is.
Find him lying down at end of the road.
Click on him to check how he is doing.

I still seem to be in sherlock mode and ive done all the things you suggestd.

You might have missed a dialogue.
Can you click on Watson?
Check the Whitechapel map and see if the clinic is seen there. If so - jump there.

After speaking to the street urchin and walking down the side street, did you hear the coughing of the Captain, and did Holmes comment on this? If not, then you are either standing by the wrong man (the Captain is at the very end of Batty St), or you have missed some dialogue somewhere, so speak again to Finley, the policeman, the niece and the street urchin on the corner to make sure.

I didn't play the demo - so I don't know. But I don't think that's it.
