Has anyone here downloaded/installed the new IE 8? I would like to hear what people think of it and if they have any problems. Thank you. Linda

I too have it - on XP Pro - SP3. No problems so far - just annoying with the new search on page thing as a toolbar instead of the little popup.

Thanks to everyone. I have XP Home and I will give it a try. Patchman you mentioned Windows 7 is that the new OS?
Linda Yes, Windows 7 is the latest OS. If you're interested in looking at it you can download it at the link below: Windows 7 Release Candidate From the paage: Watch the calendar. The RC will expire on June 1, 2010. Starting on March 1, 2010, your PC will begin shutting down every two hours. Windows will notify you two weeks before the bi-hourly shutdowns start. To avoid interruption, you'll need to install a non-expired version of Windows before March 1, 2010. You'll also need to install the programs and data that you want to use. (Learn more about installing Windows.)

Jenny, do you think a scan with Malwarebytes might be a good idea here? If mel downloaded and paid for something that is spyware or has other malware, that could be contributing to her issues. I searched all over for "foxfire" and couldn't find anything. I couldn't even find anything "selling" the free Firefox.

Hi mel! You may want to try using system restore, setting it to before you installed IE 8. Barring that, it sounds like you have a virus/malware problem. As Jenny100 stated, Firefox is free. Just my 2 cents, I would not use IE unless it was absolutely necessary.A short explanation. Virus/malware writers know that most people use IE for browsing, & they write the nasties knowing that. No browser is completely safe, but you could make yourself safer using Firefox, Seamonkey ( formerly Mozilla suite), Opera, or Kmeleon. Also, a good firewall, antivirus, & malware program, such as Malwarebytes, will help a good deal.Your surfing habits, whatever they may be, can also play a part in things. Also, with whatever browser you use, setting the browser to prompt for cookie acceptance should be a priority as well. In IE: 1)tools 2)internet options 3)privacy 4)advanced 5)check "override auto cookie handling", then select "prompt" on 1st & 3rd party cookies. How to perform a system restore: 1)start 2)programs 3)accessories 4)system tools 5)system restore Once you get the system restore window, select "restore my computer to an earlier time" there should be a heading somwhere, indicating when IE 8 was installled. You may also want to try using a program called Revo Uninstaller. It can be found: Here

Mel, I looked up MBdetails and I think you are out of luck. They are perpetrating this fraud for things like the free download of Spybot Search & Destroy, the free download of iTunes, the free AVG 8.5 and others in addition to the free download of Firefox.
Does anyone know of the best place for Mel to report this fraud? Not that it will do any good, but it should at least be reported.

Mel, I did something similar recently concerning a free download. I didn't notice when I was taken to a different website where they were asking for $34.95 for a three year membership. I used Paypal to pay for it and the next day I realized the mistake I made. I replied to the email I received from this company and accused them of fraud and told them I wanted my money refunded. I received a reply within a couple of hours that my money was refunded. I also got a reply from Paypal that they were not processing my payment. I think I got very lucky. They explained that the three year membership was a service/support contract. I don't care how they justify it but in my opinion it is fraud. Kay

I'm very sorry that you made this mistake because I recommended Firefox over IE. When I want to find a Firefox download, I do a Google search for Firefox, and it always comes up with www.mozilla.com/firefox/ or mozilla.org which are valid sites. So I didn't supply a link to the download. I still don't understand how you managed to find this ripoff organization when looking for Firefox. Maybe it's because you use AOL as a search engine and they don't warn you about fraudulent websites.
