Pdcagirl -- when you give a game to a friend, you are supposed to delete it from your hard drive -- otherwise you have pirated (stolen) the game.
Yes, if you want to play this game, you should buy another copy!

Hi pdcagirl -- If you bought the game, sold it, and then removed the game from your hard drive, that would not be pirating it. You paid for one copy, and one copy was being played. (In this case, by your friend.) But under the circumstances you describe, you bought one copy, sold it, and then are trying to play it at the same time as your friend plays the copy you sold her. So you bought one copy, but are using it as two copies on two different machines by two different people. Am I explaining this better this time? Another way of looking at it. If you bought a book and sold it to a friend, she could read it but you couldn't, and that is legal. But if you bought the book and copied every page and sold the book to your friend and then read the copy you had made, that would be against the copyright laws.

And on this basis it really is not morally responsible to buy a game, play it and then send the discs to a friend to play or even sell it to a friend - correct? The people developing the game do not receive fair compensation for their work correct? What you're describing is a 'secondary market' in economic terms (or the 2nd hand market, in normal terms ). There are book, music, movie, and game developers, publishers and publishers' organisations (eg RIAA and MPAA) who object to the existence of secondary markets, precisely for the reason you mention - there is no direct compensation to the developer (or any of the other middle men) for the secondary sales. However, others (including economists who usually have a better understanding of how markets actually work, because they're not tied to the short-term bottom-line model of thinking) recognise that a strong secondary market stimulates the primary market too. When it is possible for people to buy books, games, etc, cheaply, they can explore new authors, musicians, game genres, for a lower risk, and are then more likely to spend money on more goods in the primary market in the medium to long term. So, whilst what you were doing (playing a game you'd already sold on) was wrong in terms of the license you obtained to play the game in the first place, the act of selling the game on actually does not really harm anyone. And in fact, you could justifiably charged less for the game than you did, and still done no harm.

I bought this game then sold it to a friend because I discovered I could play without the disc. Played for quite some time into the game then for work related reasons had to stop for a period of time.
When I returned to play the game, it suddenly is asking for a disc! Do not understand why and is there some way I can get back into the game or do I have to buy it all over again! There is an option in certain newer copy "protections" that allows for checking the disc at various times during the game. Disc checks are not limited to when the game is started. If you're lucky, the game will ask for the disc, as this one did. If you're not, your game will start glitching up until it's unplayable, and you'll have no idea why. You'll think it's just a buggy game.
