I have 2 hard disks in my Win98SE machine and I have around 10 really old favourite games permanently installed there - by my "computer whizz" of a Son in Law who had to move far afield for his work and so set them up for me before he went. [They are all too difficult for me to install and get to run as I am such a techie dunce ] On my newest, although also aging (XP) machine, the RPG Morrowind certainly appears to have taken root. And it is such a huge game I think it will be there for the rest of its (or my) natural life

Blade Runner is like that for me.
When I found it in the used game store last year, it had already been out awhile (released in 1997). And I have been replaying it ever since. Every time I replay it something new and different happens. Best $4.99 I have ever spent!
The game is essentially a 5 act story and certain tasks must be performed before you can advance to the next act. But because of the non-linear game play, the ending (47 permutations within 7 broad categories) is based on the player's actions throughout the game. Everything you do as a player has consequences that directly affect the storyline. In every new game you can choose things differently and get different outcomes as the result. Fabulous! The game decides some plot devices randomly at the start of each completely new game. Because it runs in "real-time" that means that while your character is investigating and gathering clues, the computer controlled AI characters are doing the same and completing their own objectives.
This format opens everything up and allows for a personal connection to the story and characters.
I love the mood of this game. The cut scenes, the voice talent, and the music completely add to the atmosphere. There is some action sequences, but at the heart it is a true point and click adventure game. A old fashioned detective story. I wish they made more games like this!
But, I replay this one as a "casual" game so to speak because even though the storyline has different branches and the characters can behave differently each time, it can still get a bit repetitive. I go in once a month or so and visit with it to keep it fresh! My goal is to get some of the endings creator of the game Louis Castle claims have been reported as bugs because they are so exceptionally rare!

Oh, multiple endings (but maybe not so many) are OK - "variety is the spice of life" and each of us likes and dislikes different things - keeps us all interesting. I have not played Blade Runner and am not interested in watching the movie and/or TV series. So I cannot comment on it, just is not my "cuppa". As for PC games I have played and use as 'casual' game/s = I am not sure if the arcade type games like in Nancy Drew - Fox & Geese or that Italian card game in "Venice" or Hanoi Tower are what you could call casual, but I have saves in some of my games where I can go back into the game and just play the minigame just for the fun of it, do not then save it but just exit. Does that count? Love, Betty Lou

No... never thought about it. Never replayed mine... nor wanted to commit to playing an entire game all over again. However.... ....now that you bring this up, it does seem like an easy way to revisit favorite 'old haunts'... just step in and play a part of the game... maybe discover something new & unexpected. Maybe I'll give it a try... as long as Vista doesn't 'trip me up' with my oldies. Until then, I always have my eager and ever-ready opponent, Maven, to challenge me in another game of Scrabble.
