There's probably been a thread on this before but haven't seen it. Just wondering which games that people were expecting great things from have let them down.

I have to say Still Life 2 I was expecting something amazing like the first and all we got was an average playable game.

High hopes must have been dashed on others tho.

Also one of the Chronicles of Mystery games let me down or Art of Murder Puppeteer can't remember which now one of those two wasn't as good as the previous game in my opinion.

Have to say the Runaway sequel didn't let me down and from looks of the third when I get around to that it won't either.

Some of the Nancys definitely appeal more than others as well but I swear these can't always be done by the same team so that's understandable I guess. But they always seem popular on here so maybe that's just me being silly and finding them too hard lol.

Certainly Still Life 2 but the biggest dog for me was Culpa Innata. Woeful.

My last really big let down was a long time ago - with Simon 3D cry

I loved Simon 1 and 2 and still replay them but Simon 3D was a completely different kettle of fish and was full of horrible, timed, arcade style sequences rolleyes

The ridiculous thing (as far as I'm concerned lol) is that a "normal" third Simon was well into development when a marketing decision was taken to scrap it and start the 3D version instead frown

There have been a number of games in the past few years that let me down. The screenshots looked nice, but the actual game was boring to play. Also a lot of games had unhappy endings or endings that were so rushed you couldn't be sure what happened. Not 100% horrible, but certainly a letdown and no real "spark" to them.

Jack the Ripper (the 2004 Adventure Company release). Big time let down.

There have been many, many games that have let me down but then I didn't have high expectations from them before release. This is a list of games that I had high hopes for and was let down when they were released. Is it a coincidence that they are mostly newer games......I think not

Belief and Betrayal
Chronicles of Mystery: The Scorpio Ritual
Culpa Innata
Dracula 3: Path of the Dragon
Forever Worlds
Longest Journey, The
Next Life
Secret Files: Tunguska
Sherlock Holmes vs Jack the Ripper
Sinking Island

And I cannot be let down by a game that comes from the Independent Developers. Their games seem to be always better than their last and that is all the expectation I give to them.

I know I shall get all manner of blunt objects thrown at me for this but I thought The Lost Crown was a bit of a let-down. In some ways it was a super game but I expected so much more from it.
For me the lack of resolution, or explanation of large bits of the game, left me with a feeling of anti-climax, of "Well, what was that all about, then?"
At first I thought I had just missed the point, or several points, but then I realised there were long discussions on the forum about just what was going on in this game. A great many people had differing explanations for various aspects of the game story. So I wasn't alone in not being able to identify concrete explanations that would wrap the whole thing up.
Several people seem to have enjoyed this uncertainty and thought it a clever feature of the game. For me, it was vaguely unsatisfying. Similar feeling to when I've been strong and only eaten two squares of chocolate when I wanted to eat the whole bar!

For me, my last biggest let down was Murder on the Orient Express. I was excited to get the game and thought "What could be better? An Agatha Christie Mystery game with Hercule Poirot!"

Turns out I was bored through the whole game. What a letdown! I don't know if the other AC games are any better, cause I'm afraid to try them.

Anyway, that stands out as my biggest letdown. An honorable mention goes to Sherlock Holmes: Case of the Rose Tattoo. I was so sure I was going to like this game. Then they had to throw an arcade sequence into the middle of it. I couldn't win the dart game to save my soul. I had to get someone else to play that part for me.

Oh well... There are a lot more games to try!

I have never been disappointed in a game until this year. I was expecting a great voyage from/to "Heaven" and was severely let down not by the theme but by the game execution. It will be some time, if ever, before a title produces such a low in my books.

I have only played a couple of the Nancy Drews and have refused to waste any more $ on them..also the Agatha Christie ones as well. pffuii. The Aura sequel was a let down for me and Agon, Dracula3, and several others, and i can't say i have really enjoyed any of the Frogware games.. I hope we will get some better games this coming year. Am looking forward to games from Jonathan Boakes, Shadow Thor, Last Half of Darkness..will be interested to see if Black Mirror 2 and Darkness Within 2 will be as good as their firsts...enjoyed them.. luckily i have a dozen older games i have not played to tide me over in between the really good new games...AND have played several games from the Bigfishgames place that have been really, really good!..(like Return to Ravenhurst , Dire Grove and the Hidden Expedition Amazon..and several others). They help fill the gap in between getting another really good and long adventure game.

I loved the game all the way through but after nearly 30 hours of investment I agree - I felt absolutely let down by the ending! I've read just about every theory on the game and none of them work for me so no blunt objects coming your way from me Meryl! lol

I love something about all of the games I've played but I did feel let down by Secrets of the Chateau D'Or - I thought it could have been a lot better & also Conspiracies which is one of the few games I've just left but may get back to? smile

I agree with gamenut about ND games, they are simply boring to me.
Also, I actually expected so much from Dracula> The Path of The Dragon, but was disappointed both by the puzzles and the story.

I agree with Mad. My favorite games are the puzzle games with humor. Discworld, Monkey Island, Day of the Tentacle, Ankh,Zak McKracken, etc. When they made Simon 3D I really was disappointed because like Mad I loved the first two Simon games. I think the same thing happened to the Indiana Jones games. Fate of Atlantis and Lost Crusade were awesome but when they went the arcade route they lost me.

It's nice to be important but it is much more important to be nice.

Well, I strongly disagree with Culpa Innata and The Longest Journey. Those are two of the best games I've ever played. In fact, they are at the top of my list. smile

There are some games that were semi-let downs, but then I did not have high expectations of them to begin with. They were just fun diversions, such as Nibiru and Chronicles of Mystery. These are games I still enjoyed overall, though. A Vampyre Story was a slight let down, as I was expecting more, but I love it nonetheless. I would buy and enjoy sequels to any of these games.

I think the biggest let down I ever experienced was King's Quest: Mask of Eternity. Talk about ruining the series. I wish I'd known about it beforehand so no money was wasted on it. And with everything I've heard about Still Life 2, I think I will avoid that one. It sounds like a similar situation. Too bad, as I was really looking forward to it.

After all the hype I was let down by The Longest Journey, thought it boring to put it mildly. Also add Chronicles of Mystery, but mainly that was because of all the trouble I had going at the time which meant restarting it at least 4 times. By the time I actually finished it, it didn't seem worth all that bother.

On the whole I just shrug off the minor letdowns from sequels as just the developer satisfying some one else instead.

I just remembered the game that really had me fuming, Annacapri(sp) The dream. The ending did it in, to me it was all wrong.

Forever Worlds, yeah. That held such promise, but I can't think of anybody who played it who had anything positive to say about it.

Funny, nobody has mentioned Paradise. It wouldn't play on my old computer. I didn't like the story when eventually it did play on the newer machine.

Liked Anacapri. I thought Culpa Innata was overhyped, thus became a slight letdown. Several recent ND games have been below par (not the most recent). Loved Lost Crown. Chronicles of Mystery are OK but nothing outstanding, as are the Art of Murder series.

As for Runaway series, I thought the first game was OK but the second game was a major letdown. I will not touch the third one on principle.

Goes to show we have varied tastes and expectations.

I thought that Ransom of the Seven Ships was the nadir of the more recent Nancy Drew games. Too many timed sequences spoil the broth... er, game.

I really didn't enjoy Paradise either, and struggled through to the end of it with a heavily used walkthrough (to get there that little bit faster). I hate to leave a game unfinished, no matter how lousy it is. lol

I think my biggest let down was Forever Worlds . The disc had me so frustrated that instead of tossing it I made a coffee coaster to use at the computer while I am playing my real games.

I'd have to agree: Forever Worlds. Huge promise, considerably less than huge delivery.

Nancy Drew games started to become letdowns for me. I used to jump right in whenever a new one came out, but stopped a few games ago. White Wolf (#16) was my last 'immediate' (at-full-price) purchase, but about 3/4 of the way through, I didn't even want to finish it. After about a year, I got Crystal Skull, but only at a discounted price (didn't feel as ripped-off by paying less for it).. & I finished it (it was okay). However, if I ever decide to buy #s 18, 19, & 20, the prices will have to be very low. It sounds like #21 (Waverly Academy) is better, so I may buy it eventually.

I thought Lotus Spring would be a pleasing game, but it, too, was a letdown. I think I expected more, since it was touted as being special because it was developed by women, with a woman's perspective. Also, it seemed like it might be an interesting story, with a gentle, peaceful environment. As I recall, I was immediately bored and somewhat baffled... but mostly bored. Kept the game though... thinking it was just my state-of-mind at the time.

I really enjoyed The Longest Journey,
it was "TLJ 2: Dreamfall" that let me down.
The Atari-style controls stunk as did the change
in storyline.

And, if memory serves, the biggest puzzle in that game was getting it to install and run correctly (!).

The last Nancy I liked was 'Danger By Deception' (?) mainly for the scuba diving and sea stuff. I sold all my newer Nancys except 'Danger By Design' (GAG) Thought I might finish that one, but, Nah! Days short, summer gone, good games (and a James Cameron movie) acoming! I enjoy ANYTHING Jonathan Boakes, so say NOTHING negative about the man! I see his games as one huge story he has to get out of him, tearing it bit by bit from his still warm flesh. Lost Souls is on it's way as I babble. I hated Still Life's demo with every fiber of my being. I wouldn't touch that lemming for a new car and a bunch of tax free duckets.
Oh dear LORD they mentioned Forever Worlds, too???!
