Hi tamberine,

Do you mean James Thurston, the engineer? There are several instances where you need to talk to the Hardy Boys about him - whereabouts exactly are you at in the game right now? smile

Have you clicked on the stove door in the kitchen and read the work pay receipt for Thurston?

I don't know whereabouts you are. Have you solved any of the puzzles with the weights yet? Perhaps check MaG's walkthrough against what you've done already, if you're fairly near the start of the game.

Has the emergency train brake been set already?
I think you missed a dialogue or 2 with one of the characters. Talk to everyone again. luck

tamberine,

Please read what I posted above. You missed a dialogue or an event has not happened yet.

One of the people.

Please remember to use the Edit button rather than stack posts. Also - we read all posts here and answer as soon as we possibly can - so no need to repeatedly ask the same question. Thanks for helping us here. smile

In order to be able to open the kitchen and stove and read the receipt, you need to set the weights on the scale mechanism. MaG's walkthrough states:

The stove in the kitchen has a square and a duck on the door. Based on the sampler, the square's number is 4 and the duck is 1.
They are the 3rd and 4th light, so there's a need to use only 3 slugs and then 4.
Place 3 + 8 on one pan and 7 on the other. This lights up the square.
Place 1, 2 on the pan with 3 and take out 8, leaving 7 alone on the other pan (1 + 2 + 3 on one pan and 7 on the other). This lights up the duck.

You should now be able to open the stove.

luck
