Hi Played enough of the game so far as to have gotten myself out of the sewers and ready to start quests "proper" [This is a new game for me.] I've done OK with inventory stuff on the whole but although I can see what spells I have at my disposal [F3] I can't work out how to actually cast one. And perusing the manual and a couple of sites on-line hasn't made me any the wiser Can anyone tell me in VERY simple terms how to go about it, please ?? Cheers. Mad

OK, your're playing it on the PC so.. click on the spell from your magic menu click the R key - this readies the spell click the left mouse button - this sends it You can assign anything to a hot key so if you use a certain spell alot do that - it's faster Also make sure your destruction level is high enough to do the spell you selected I prefer fighting so I never messed with magic too much but this should do it. A good site might be elderscrolls.com/codex Or just google oblivion and your question I doubt they make the manuels anymore and they might be collector's items now (?) And welcome to Tamriel

Hi Yankee Clipper - And thanks for helping Yes, I am playing on PC so I'll try out those instructions as soon as I get to play again. [I have the "Game Of The Year Edition" which came with a 53 page booklet manual.] Thanks, Mad ********************** EDIT :Well, I followed your instructions but am obviously doing something wrong - because I still can't cast a spell. Once I've selected the spell I want and have come out of the Magic Menu, I can see the spell icon at the bottom of the screen and when I then click the R key, a kind of "target" sign appears - but when I then click the left mouse button, my weapon becomes re-equipped and I am waving that round instead of casting the spell EDIT 2 : SORTED !! I just have to select my spell and come out of the Magic Menu. Then, when I want to actually cast the spell, hit the "C" key

Oh goodgoodgood!! you got it. Ob is a wonderful game but don't get hooked on it too much. I've played it 2X on PC and now for the 3rd time on Play Station. It's been a couple years on PC and I've forgotten some of the commands. Hang on to that manual - is it the big soft cover book. 2 years ago the Morrowind manuel sold for 99$ on ebay. There are many good websites for Ob.

Not get hooked ?? How does one avoid that ?? Morrowind certainly had me hooked and I could well be going down the same path with Oblivion My manual is a softcover book but I wouldn't describe it as "big" except for the number of pages it has. The only way I would sell it though would be alongside the game - if I ever sell that. Which, of course, if I get hooked, is probably not very likely

Well, I'm definitely hooked on Oblivion now - just as I was on Morrowind They are similar but subtly different games and both real treats to play. I especially like the "fast travel" facility in Oblivion. A good addition I feel

Good for you, Mad and yippee!!! I posted befor this is the 5th time I've played Ob and still enjoy it. As usual I'm a handsom Imperial man double warrier - don't care for magic. Plan to do the arena hand to hand with gameplay at 3/4. Fun. The 1st playthrough I was a girl kajiit and knew this game was meant to be played many times. However, it's rumored there's an Elder Scrolls 5 on the horizon - hope so. Didn't care that much for Morrowind. Have you played the 2 MW extensions?

Ooooh .... An Elder Scrolls 5 ?? Just have to hope my computer will be good enough for it !! I played Morrowind + Tribunal + Bloodmoon - which took me a very long time - but what a fabulous experience And I have the GOTY version of Oblivion so I guess I'll be playing this for quite some time too I always play a goodie - such as a Paladin type - with just a little magic capability. [Even though I have attempted evil characters I can never stick with 'em !! ]

Hi The first "Gate" I completed (which was quite near the start of the game) was part of a quest. However, I've since seen at least one other Gate that I'm pretty sure I could just "go" to. So should I simply wade in off my own bat and attempt any Gates I can reach - or should I wait until they become part of a quest .. like the first one ?? Help always appreciated !! Cheers. Mad

That 1st gate was at Kvatch and is the beginning of the main quest. Now you can pursue the main quest and continue with Martin or put this quest on hold at any point in the game. After the main quest is started oblivion gates will appear and you just wade in and destroy them. And the great thing is you get this wonderful armor and the sigil stones to enhance your weapons/armor. I believe there are 60 gates although I've never got them all. Remember to look for hate tunnels/red gnash tunnels inside these gates because these make your way to the tower portals easier. These gates that appear are not part of a quest.

Sixty gates ???? I'd be playing the game for another ten years if I went for all those !! But thanks for the info, Yankee Clipper I did know about continuing the main quest "at my leisure" which is what I have been doing - because I did it with Morrowind too. So, I've been having a great time with loads of Oblivion side quests also

Something else about the gates - after you finish the main quest they will no longer appear.

Each of the Gates allows you to collect one of a special type of runestone (that's probably not what they're really called, but I have no memory) that allows you to upgrade weapons or armour. As the game progresses, these items become much more powerful. So for that reason I usually go into Gates at higher levels, putting off the final battles until well into my game.
The stones are random, so I save just before closing each gate to see what stone I got. If I don't like it, I reload.
I think I'm quite ready for another adventure.

Having played quite a way into Oblivion now and got the hang of it pretty well today I decided to install the 2nd DVD - which contains Knights of the Nine and Shivering Isles. It installed fine but do I have to have that 2nd disk actually in the drive instead of the main Oblivion disk in order to play these two "extras" ?? Thanks for any help. Mad

I don't know because I played those 2 expansions on playstation and it's all on one disc. Someone here must know but I suspect the disc must be in the drive - try playing them with the original disc and it will give you a message if that doesn't work.

Well, I tried - but the second disk seems to be "installation only" - so I'll go check a walkthrough and see if any of the quests showing for the extensions are now available to me now. Thanks, Yankee Clipper

If I remember correctly, Mad, I installed the 2 expansions & ran it with the main disk. I never played either of them, though--couldn't get into them.
