I'm still pretty mad at them for their dirty little "trick" with the new website launch. I'm sure I will cool down though and must see what Baldurs Gate is all about!
Gardens put to bed. Time for more reading and gaming.

What dirty little trick? I downloaded BG. Nice to have a backup copy that doesn't require those oh-so annoying disk changes throughout the game. I'm playing through for old time's sake.
I think I'm quite ready for another adventure.

Oh, I see. I missed it all.
I always downloaded my games as soon as I bought them, though I don't know how to save them to a separate disk.
I love GOG. I'm hoping they come up with Thief Gold one of these days, though it doesn't look as though there are a lot of people clamouring for it.
I think I'm quite ready for another adventure.

Sherryah, my being turned off on them in no way reflects GameBoomers opinion, it is just my personal opinion. Ana

Oh, I forgive them, Sherryah, I just don't trust them. Any game I buy goes right onto a disk. Disappear on me, willya? Hah! Take that!

Sherryah,
I've used my browser (Opera) and the GOG downloader and they both run at about the same speed, which on my computer is @350 kbps. So, no, I haven't noticed their downloads being slower...or any slower than anyone else's. <g>
I think your problem may be on their end. They're probably still having problems with their new website. Or is it Download Accelerator that's stopping and asking for your user name and password? Obviously, I'm not a lot of help. Try using your browser, though, and see if it still happens.
Here's the good news. When you finally get GK downloaded, you just install and play. GOG has built DOSbox into the game so you don't have to do anything or understand anything. Yeehah!
Gil.

A couple of people have mentioned copying their gog games to disk -- I assume you mean dvd? How are you accomplishing that? Some of these games are still pretty large.
I've been thinking about downloading the Gabriel Knight games. I had lots of fun with those way back when. The built in dosbox is a definite winner for me.
Publlicity stunt or no, gog has brought back a ton of older games for me -- stuff that I though I'd never play again and so traded or gave away. Having these updated to run on my new laptops is so great.
I think I'm quite ready for another adventure.

hagatha,
Just pick up some blank DVD+R disks. I actually bought 3 packs of 5 at the grocery store for less than $10 total (on sale and don't ask me why they had them) and each disk has a capacity of 4.7 GB!
Fortunately for me, Win 7 Pro comes with a utility to burn the downloaded game files to disk and it doesn't take very long at all.
Gil.
I meant to ask you guys, on the subject of Planescape Torment, how difficult are the action sequences? The game looks interesting but having played a number of freebie RPGs back in the day, I know I'm dreadful at combat and I don't want to pay for a game and then be unable to get past the first nasty villain that goes after me.
I recall trying to play The Last Express once...sigh.
Gil.

For me, who loves the game, the combat was manageable for a good two thirds - and it is a loooooong game - but after that the difficulty increased and started getting to me But then I'm known to NOT be a brilliant fighter so I'm sure a veteran will come along soon and give you a more accurate picture

Praise from Caesar is praise indeed! I may just try it, Mad, unless a veteran lets me know that villain would wipe the floor with me before the credits finished rolling. <g>
Did you finish?

In comparison to similar RPG's like Baldur's Gate, the combat in Planescape Torment is a smaller component of the game, but it is still part of it, and mostly unavoidable -- though a clever conversationalist can get out of some fights. The game is much more heavily story-oriented than most. It's a very good game, but you do need to do some fighting. As with all RPG's the ease of combat depends on your choice of party members, and of course on your chosen character class (which you can change during the course of the game).
I would say this game is good enough that it would be worth learning how to do the combat. Way back in the day, I was hopeless with combat and stuck to adventure-only games until Baldur's Gate came along and one of the mods here patiently taught me how to fight. I've been playing RPG's and action games ever since.
I think I'm quite ready for another adventure.

Thanks, hagatha. I'm going to have to think about this. I'm not sure I'd be able to talk myself out of a sticky situation. But if I do decide to try the game, I may be coming back for some advice on how to handle combat. Hope you'll be handing it out!

There are lots of PsT veterans here and I'm sure we'll all pitch in.
As for the talking your way out of trouble bit, build a character with high Wisdom.
I think I'm quite ready for another adventure.

The big thing to remember about this excellent game, Planescape Torment is that everything you thought you knew about monsters is turned upside down. It's all gone topsey-turvey - certain monsters are not what they seem - rats are very intelligent and smart, there's a powerfull ratking, and being dead doesn't being dead. You just wake up in the starting area again, with some more of your (lost) memories. And in starting area, there will be zombies, but you'll need to talk with them...
And wisdom is an excellent stat. And if you have a high enough wisdom, intelligence and charisma or a combination of these, you will be able to bypass most of the combat (but not all). This game needs you think outside the box...
Adventure gaming is fun

Karsten, very good points. And of course the makes dying in combat far less of a problem for the novice fighter. Edit: And now they are offereing Icewind Dale and its two expansions. Good deal. And they are clearly going to add more classic Black Isle games to their list. Two of them are obviously BG2 and expansions and IWD2, but what are the other two, I wonder? They already have the two early Fallouts on offer. Edit October 18. Playing through my downloaded Baldur's Gate, and I hate to say it, but this the buggiest game ever. Quests not starting, NPC's disappearing, and I even have the dreaded Durlag's Tower bug, unable to get back in once leaaving, a bug I've never encountered before in 12-15 or so plays through this game. Wonder if I have a bad download?

BG2 with expansion is now available!
Can someone please help an old person who is increasingly technology challenged? I have burned DVD copies of my downloaded games from GOG, but the resulting DVD's are useless because I can't install the game onto my computer from them. There is an .exe file which starts the game, but because the game is running from the DVD, I can't make saves.
How do I copy the game onto DVD so that it will function like a regular game cd and install the game when I insert the DVD? Is that even possible with games downloaded from GOG? I'd like to have a DVD library of my downloaded games instead of having them on my hard drive all the time but it doesn't seem possible.
I think I'm quite ready for another adventure.

Hagatha, would you like me to transfer this to the glitches?
I went to their website but as I haven't bought a game from them, I couldn't access support and couldn't find an FAQ.
