It is easier to troubleshoot if I know more about your laptop and system,
for example if you are installing on XP SP3 or Windows 7 (x86 or x64) and what video card and processor you have.
But here are my thoughts without having that important info.
Treasure Island has pretty low end specs calling for a 64 MB DirectX 9 Compatible Video Card.
But if you are on a laptop it would be wise to check what your VC is capable of
as Onboard video cards are limited in what they can show and how they react in a virtual 3D environ.
I use
Can You Run It? and put in a high end game (like Mass Effect 2 or Devil May Cry 4) to see my VC specs such as Video RAM and Pixel/Vertex Shader version .
It requires installing a java applet in IE8 that is completely safe and easily removed.
Once you know your VC you can go directly to the manufacturers website or Windows Update to ensure the most current driver.
Also, since there was a Visual C++ error message I wold ask if the install disk for the game has the version it uses for the game to reinstall.
Otherwise it wouldn't hurt to make sure that is the current one
Microsoft Visual C++ 2010 Redistributable Package(x86) as well as your
DirectX End-User Runtime Web Installer.
Hope that helps!
