have any of you ever started a game , and then lost interest to the point of it never getting finished ? i'm not talking about being stumped for what to do next ,or coming up against a hard puzzle. i mean , the game just goes "blah" and you could not care less about finishing it.
if so ,what was the reason ? bad story ,too many repetious tasks ,no variety in puzzles ,long load times ,etc.?

niteowl,
I had this happen to me with Riven. The game was beautiful but I struggle with first person games. I pretty much stick with third person games now. The character interaction is just more enjoyable for me in third person for some reason.
It's nice to be important but it is much more important to be nice.

"The character interaction is just more enjoyable for me in third person for some reason."
It is for me, too, SQF, but I just cannot get into The Whispered World, 3rd person or not. ALL of the characters, with the exception of the caterpillar?, give me the pip, starting with what's-his-name and his eternal whining. I got past the talking stones into the oracle's house and then found that I really didn't care what happened next.
Not too fond of 3D either but that's another subject.

You know, I was just thinking about the reason I ditched Alter Ego and it's the same one, the characters. I didn't like them at all (though Alter Ego was also muy depressing!) so I suppose that it's the writing that makes or ruins a game for me. Lousy graphics in new games irk me a lot but if the story and its characters are good, I'm not likely to sail the disk out the window. <g>

Murder in the Abbey was the pits for me.... Endless dialog...Over, and Over...You had to consistently click on all the dialog trees to advance in the game... What a pain This is my opinion...So please respect my views on the game...You might have liked the game....I did not care for it.... Its was a waste of money...

space , i played tony with subtitles ! why anyone would think you'd want to hear a voice like him , or al emmo , or whomever for hours on end is beyond me...... until the game i'm playing , i never realized how important voice is for me ! and there are many i couldn't imagine any other voice but the one they used. right now , tedious is the word i'd use to describe my state of mind in the current game. it is a sequel , and i didn't like the voice the first time , but i played with it off , and enjoyed the game so much it was one of a few that i replayed. this sequel ? we'll see how long i last... darlene , but you didn't rip it out , right ? i mean to say, you finished the game ? i just wondered if anybody went nuts ,ripped out a game , and sent it sailing part way through !?!?!? because i did it once , and caught myself thinking about it again today.....

Lol! That's not fair! Come on, tell us, what is it?
And what was the game you sent sailing out the window?

There were two games I didn't finish, Chemicus and Schizm. Both because the puzzles didn't make sense to me.
As I played Chemicus I continues to get the feeling if I'd been a chemistry major the puzzles would have been easier to solve. And some of the parts needed for some puzzles were so obscure I really needed the WT just to solve them. I thought after the first three Myst games this one would be great. Boy, was I disappointed.
Talk about a game where the puzzles really didn't make sense and you've got Schizm. During this game the WT was my guide the entire time. It had to be. Some puzzles I got the clue and figured out. Others, even though I looked the clues in the eye, had no idea what they meant.
The one I can remember is the abstract picture in a room that was the clue for solving the puzzle in that room. Yeah....right!! I don't know how many times I read the WT for that room, but each time I couldn't see how this dumb looking abstract picture even related to the puzzle.
Needless to say, neither one was finished. Nor will they be.
If something gets your goat, it just proves you have a goat to get.

the one i'm playing now is rtmi2 - i swear if mina says "c'mer and get your ears scratched, sweetie",one more time i'm going to gag ! just pick the danged monkey up , and let's go ,already. the one i literally threw out the window was Aura ,fate of ages. i could not get the big machine puzzle towards the end , and finally didn't care if what's his name and his silly face saved anything or not. to be fair , tho' - i had my bil staying with me for his job , it was 100 degrees ( ac not working) and every time i sat down to play , someone needed something -phone , dog , cat. they did leave me alone after i stopped screaming the little wooden guy's name tho'.....

100 degrees in New England!? I'm surprised you didn't throw your BIL out the window! Rofl!
I've not played either of those and right now, I'm not sure I ever will. <g>

I just couldn't generate enough enthusiasm to finish "Next Life". Everything about the game bored me silly

The game Heaven I had a hard time finishing it- the only reason I did is I find it very hard almost impossible NOT to finish a game or a book! lol I have to work on that. Two reasons. First the very -very-very-- heavy religious dialog any time you clicked on the main character and you had to a lot) felt like I was in a cult meeting and the puzzles. There were about 5 main ones, once you figured out the first one of a group you just had repetition for the remaining.

Bristol I like the ND games and have played most of them. I agree about the chores. Especially that last few games (Waverly Academy was like the old ND games tho... i must admit. i had fun with Waverly) I unfortunately couldn't finish Paradise Season of Storms. It's probably b/c I just wasn't in the mood to run back and forth anymore. Great game. Wonderful graphics. Good voice acting but I just couldn't take the "trudge, trudge, trudge" sound. I kept saying "why can't I just click on the building and just BE THERE "
Dear forest animals, I've been singing for over an hour, where are you? Sincerely, Too lazy to clean the house

Niteowl07!! I thank you - I was thinking about a thread like this but I didn't want to be the only one who felt this way - I thought I would be. Anyway - YES there are a few I can think of - right off the bat - any Nancy Drew Game now - used to be ok but not anymore - I have the last 3 on my PC - unfinished - in fact - I am going to delete them tonight !! Homer6 mentioned Schism - yep me too - Just could not find the interest to complete it - the puzzles made no sense. One game I looked so forward to playing - but wound up tossing was Indigo Prophecy - great story - graphics etc - but when I start hitting those mini-games or die when time runs out stuff - I just loose it and out the game goes. Moment of Silence - That one started ok - but all the clicking through the aimless dialog - line after silly line, - out you go!! Alida - was another - I really wanted to get into this one - but it just was there NOT THERE! The game just bored me - the puzzles were strange - ah - what the heck - flung that disk out the window too. There were others - and I would love to see other gamer's comments. I don't care too much if the puzzles are hard sometimes but I just won't play a game that I have to fight a keyboard ( Dead Reefs !!!) - or beat a clock - or listen to line after line of dribble. Great Thread

If I find a game tedious, I can usually struggle through to the end of it regardless, because I do hate to give up on something once I've started it. But. BUT. If a game irritates and annoys me down to my last fibre, or if the interface is frustrating and un-user friendly, then you won't see more than a rainbow blur as it's ripped out of my PC and shoved back on the shelf. A Vampyre Story: I wanted to strangle that dumb bat; couldn't take any more of his excruciatingly unfunny backchat. Murder in the Abbey: Glitchy & dreary. That was the beginning of the end as far as me & cartoony type games were concerned. Sam & Max Volume 1: That put the full stop at the end of the beginning. I avoid cartoon graphics in adventure games like the plague these days.

traveler , ! i thought of that, but he's a nice guy... it's really amazing how different things just drive us nuts , huh ? and when you think about how many games you have played , it's really a small number that learn to fly.... you could never make me give 'em up

Rushes, I am so with you on Vampyre Story! I swear, 12 year olds must have written it because the humor certainly wasn't aimed at anyone older.
I have played some free games with cartoon graphics that weren't bad at all - The Ivy's Spooks, for instance - so I'm not totally with you there. Spooks was cute and I enjoyed it. And while not free (darn it), Broken Sword 1 remains on my list of the best.
Btw, I can see now that I should be standing outside some selected windows with a catcher's mitt. <g>

Stand under my window Traveler - They fly out like bats in a belfry I just don't have much patience these days. I used to play them to the end - even if I had to use a walkthrough. To me it seems like the older games - the ones you didn't need a PC powerful enough to run NASA - had much better playability power.

Patience...whazzat? I know, if a game doesn't grab me, I'm off trying another one. I had more, once. Patience, I mean. I must have. Do you know how long it took me to stumble over the wolfbane in KQ2vga? Urk! I'm not telling. Found it eventually, though, and didn't even know I was looking for it.
Complaints about linear games (which I prefer) abound but some of those old ones in which you didn't get anywhere unless you'd been there, done that, were tough! Or maybe I'm just a dimbulb. <g> Could be.
