Just started the game. I fed the cat, got the map and placed on the desk, bulb, talked to Ruth, glass of water, alkaseltzer, nail file, felt-tip marker and I still can't leave. Any hints please.

I thought I did th map puzzle but didn't. I have the map on the table. Here's my problem...I have the metal box and retrieved the bulb but can't get the second item. I have all the other items including the sticky notes but can't get them on the map. I think the hang up may be with getting the box turned. Any suggestions?

Yes, you'll need the rusty bolt from the box.

Right click on the box in inventory to bring it into close-up view.

Turn the box to the short side to see the inside of it. Right-click-holding and dragging your mouse should do this.

The game manual also says: Using the mouse wheel will turn the object left or right.

I'm in the bar and can't get either the bartender or girl to talk. I have a rust key, empty bottle, spray bottle and paper towel. Am I missing something? TIA

Restarted the bar scene. I have the paper towels, cleaner, found batteries and gave them to the girl, screwdriver, talked with bartender and girl, and the key which is rusty. Checked the key on the padlock in the ladies room. She said No way. Tried talking with bartender and girl again and Nikki doesn't feel like talking. Am I still missing something?

Examine the key closely in inventory, make sure Nicole notes it is rusty.

Right-click examine the empty oil bottle in inventory.

Then try talking to the bartender again, see if you can get the dialogue about the oil.

Nicole notes the key is rusty, the padlock is rusty. But I still "I don't feel like talking right now" from Nicole when I try to talk with the bartender about the oil. Thinking maybe the bottle is already filled with oil, I clicked the key on the bottle and the other way around and nothing happens. Perhaps a glitch?

I have the oil now. I realized I was clicking on the grate not the padlock.

I'm in the FBI lab and can't get the scanner to accept the playing card for analysis. Would someone give me a hint please. TIA

Did you do this part:
Look close at the Jack of hearts in evidence bag. Use the gloves on it to take it out of the bag.
Open the scanner. Place the card inside.

I have the gloves and the Jack of Hearts out of the bag. I opened the scanner and it seems I am looking at all the working parts, no flat glass to place it on.

Yes, that's how that particular scanner looks -- it's a little strange. Try moving your cursor slowly over all of the interior area while holding the playing card, see if you can hit the hotspot for it.

Have you spoken completely to Wang and Nick, in the meantime? Have you right-clicked on the card in inventory to examine it?
