I maintain Pagoda which is a collection of links for Adventure and similar games. Every so often I have a go at trying to sort the games to make it more useful for people using the Pagoda site. These attempts normally peter out for one reason or another.

My latest attempt is to come up with a set of categories, please see the first pass at taxonomy. Comments very welcome.

(Please forgive my posting of these links here.)

I like the world adventure category to explain those games.
Is edutainment (or some variant thereof) a possible category?

Thanks for the guide! But where do you think my game would fit? I adapt classic novels, and maybe "world" would be closest, but it says
Quote:
frequent use of mechanisms... piecing together information

My games don't have much of that unless it's in the original book. If the book says the hero used X on Y then I make that into a puzzle (e.g. in the Count of Monte Cristo the hero has to find treasure and later use a telegraph station), but otherwise I make them pretty easy: they're about the stories more than puzzles.

Is there a sub category for straight adaptations or story games?

Under Casual Game -- Adventure Lite you list Azada.
The first Azada was much more of a puzzle game than anything else. You'd pick books off the wall and each book contained a set of puzzles that you had to complete in a certain time. Although some of the puzzles were sort of "adventure lite," most of them were just puzzles of various sorts.

The second Azada (Azada: Ancient Magic) was more adventure lite. Although you still had books on the wall that you'd choose from, the book you chose would give you pages which were different scenes in an interactive world.

Other examples of adventure-lite would be the two Nancy Drew Dossier games: Lights, Camera Curses and Resorting to Danger.

What am I missing here? When I click on one of the categories all I get is a definition of the category. I don't see any list of games included in a category.

If I hover the mouse over a category, a brief description of the category appears with one or two games listed as examples. Here are a couple of screenshots:

My mouse cursor doesn't show up in the screenshots, but the listing I'm hovering over is highlighted in red/orange.
