Yup, it worked, all right. Next time I'm going to try throwing things at him, barrels and grenades and such, see how he likes it.
Now, has anyone worked out how to actually navigate using that awful map? Detroit wasn't too bad, but now I'm utterly frustrated trying to find my way around in the next city.
There are two sectors in the Lower City, but the map doesn't show which sector it refers to. I'm trying to find a specific place; I am doing, say subquest s1, just for instance, and it shows a blue x on the map. I follow the marker until I get to that spot and it turns out to be the door into the other sector. I go through the door, and the s1 marker points me to...the door to the first sector again, back and forth, back and forth. If I try to locate the actual place on the map, I can't tell where it is because the map does not indicate sector name. I can see up and down, which level the place is on, but not where the place is. Why did they not label the sector name on the map, I wonder? Seems needlessly confusing to me. Spoils what is otherwise a good experience.
I think I'm quite ready for another adventure.

hagatha, wish I could help you out with the map thing, but I am definitely challenged in this area also. I believe the X for the primary mission will be in blue and the subquests will have yellow x's. And if you place your cursor on the x's, it will tell you which subquest that is for. You probably already know this. But other than that, I have also gotten lost and can't even tell what sector I need to go to and where I am. In fact, that's where I am just now, needing to find a place and not having the first clue where to go. I got so frustrated yesterday, I had to put the game away and go do something else. I have the print walkthrough, and even with that I get confused! Well, once I can find out where to go, I am on a quest to get more praxis points because I discovered that later on I need several augs in order to continue on in the stealth manner, like the Icarus landing system. Maybe I will bump into you, hagatha, on one of the streets or back alleys, and we can give each other directions... Andy

Andy, I'm in Upper Whatchamacallit now, and so far I haven't needed any Landing system. I saw a couple of places where it might come in handy, but so far no need. I hope we really don't need Icarus; I just used up 7 praxis points on other things. What else did you "discover" that we need for stealth? I am enjoying my stealthy romp through the game, though I haven't finessed it as well as I would have liked. There have been a couple of embarassing messy moments. I guess if I have to I'll fall back on the sniper rifle - which was always my kill weapon of choice in the original, that is if I wasn't playing a no-kill game. One of my favourite levels of all time is the second trip to New York, high on the rooftops, picking off the soldiers one by one. And chucking Grenades at the Bots from on high, turning them against their masters. Ah, sweet reminiscence.

I know what you mean, hagatha, about the 'messy moments'. I prefer not to kill, but sometimes it's pretty unavoidable. It's great in this game that you get extra points for a humane takedown, although when Peter breaks a guy's arm behind his back, yuck! Let's see, besides the Icarus landing system, I am also going to get the punch through walls aug (forget what it's called), and I also had to get the jump higher aug, which you may have already gotten. So I am trying to wrap up a couple of side quests in order to get more money and points to get more augs. Or I will when I get time to play which I haven't in a couple days. First things first, though - I have to find out where I need to go and figure out how to get there. I'm with you - I really can't understand why they didn't label the sections and more buildings in the maps so you can nagivate more easily. Maybe they figured it was part of the challenge in the game. It is for me! So I guess you eventually found your way out of the lower city - congrats! It's still a fun game - getting lost or not.. Yes, I did find my way out of the lower city, by using my razor-sharp brain...to cheat and find the answer on line. Once you know which sector you need to be in, finding the spot isn't so hard. Just remember that places that you've already broken into earlier may be respawned for a quest, so go back and check (the rooftops, for instance; there was a house I broke into way back that turned out to be the end point of one of the quests for the prostitute).
I haven't got the jump or punching aug yet. I spent all my points on hacking, aim stabilization (just in case I do need that sniper rifle) and stealth, with a few others thrown in. I may start loading up on the other things later. But you've got me thinking that maybe I should reload and get some of those now. They sound like fun. I do have a save a t the start of this level, so if I need a new approach I can just do it again.
I was thinking I want to play this again using a more forward approach, but the game seems to push you in the hacking direction. There are so many hacking oppportunities, far more than in the original game, and you'd lose all that experience if you went the guns blazing route.
This is a really good game, close to the mark. One thing they missed, though; while playing the first game I always feel a sense of intense solitude, and I don't get that here. In the original the streets are almost empty, even in the Hong Kong and Paris segments. I love that long street view in Paris, with just a few guards and the 'bots patrolling the dark streets. I really got the sense that Denton was truly alone. In this iteration, there are so many people around I don't get that feeling, and for me that's obviously important.

Just a quick note, hagatha, before heading out this morning - you won't need those punching and jumping augs until a little later in the game, and I think it is always a good idea to up your hacking capabilities, whether or not you play stealthily. I have broken into some storage lockers that have contained some good stuff, and some of the hotel rooms are higher level security. About playing alone, yes, this one is different. But I am quite enjoying the interaction, partly because the acting and script is so uniformly good in this game. Next play through, though, I am planning to go a combination of stealth-combat and am already planning what weapons I will take. Woo Hoo! Andy

Karsten, I was thinking that myself. This world is pre-plague, overcrowded and full of itself, with lots of flashy technology. It does make sense that there would be lots of people around.
I had a lot of trouble going the stealth route through Tai Yong Medical. At one point, frustrated with my progress, I "turned" a couple of 'bots just for fun, and then saved over a crucial save, so now I can't complete the mission on stealth unless I go way back. The employees are all crouching and cringeing in the safety zones and my cover is blown. Oh well. I'll try ghosting the game some other time. So far I've only needed the sniper rifle once, the pistol/machine pistol three or four times, and the tranquilizer rifle about twenty times, so I'm not doing too badly. Mostly I've been able to do silent takedowns from behind, only using the stun gun when I absolutely have to.
Andy, next time I'm going to hone my rifle skills earlier in the game. I still don't know who the good guys are, or the bad, so I'm trying hard not to kill anyone. The first time I played the original I felt so guilty when I found out what was going on, realizing that I'd been killing the good guys. I was a bit more comfortable with unavoidable messiness once I knew who was who.

Cocoa - thanks for the advice on nagivating! I will try that next time I play. I'm sure I wasn't paying attention to levels in relation to where I needed to go. It's still a little confusing, but I'll give it another try. I have just had a major achievement in hacking a terminal at The Hive for the Shanghai Justice subquest. I must have tried about 20 times to hack that terminal without success. Then I finally figured out I needed to raise my fortify stealth aug, and that did the trick. And what a surprise came after meeting with Malik! Now I am off to try to get the Tong off Jaya's back for the Bar Tab subquest, and I'll get to try that navigating again cause I will need to find her. I'll let you know what happens. Andy

Yes, it is much more fun now that I am not dying every few minutes! And yes, it is the bar on the upper floor. You had a creative solution, but with me there was a bouncer standing just to the left of the terminal, so I found I really had to take him out cause he was in my line of sight. Then, of course, a bunch of other guards came to see what was happening and opened fire on me, but as long as I stayed crouched just behind the bar, they eventually gave up and went away. Actually, I think I took out two guys. It was so funny to hear them say, huh, don't see him, he must have gotten away (lol). But I probably could have put one of those barrels just to the side of the terminal and hidden there while I did my hacking. Good idea!! Andy

I just brought this game and a little confused about installing it. What is Steam and do I really need to create an account with them to play the game?
Thanks Linda

Hi Lindy,
Looks as though you figured out that you do have to have a Steam account to play. The game`s been virtually flawless for me so far, I have to say. Just downloaded a new expansion for the game, so we`ll see how that goes.
I`ve decided that the hacking in this game is a wee bit too much of a good thing. I know you can avoid it, but the experience points are just too tempting. I`m getting better at stealth, though. And the crouching, cornering under cover, and rolling from cover to cover works perfectly.
My one big crit of the game is that a lot of the rooms seem to be excuses for more hacking rather than plot oriented, and I`m referring specifically to the Tai Yong Medical level. Not much point to it, just room after room of hacking opportunities.
Still, loads of fun.
Edit: Hoo boy, that second Boss fight. I tried everything and just kept on dying. Then I went back to the strategy that first ocurred to me, and dropped her in a couple of minutes, easy as can be. Good thing this game allows you to save in the middle of a boss fight, though

Wow, hagatha, you have done your second boss fight already?? You are really moving through this game! So can you give me a hint about your strategy, cause I know you are playing mostly stealth too? What augmentations do you have now? I am moving through the TYM Augmentation Storage Area and just had a blast climbing over some crates, finding vents, and floating down a long, long shaft with my Icarus aug. Lots of fun! Of course I got lost again, but that's a given (lol). Now I am supposed to have picked up an access card in one of the storage rooms, but for the life of me, I can't find it in inventory. Maybe it's stored in my mail - I'll have to try that. In any case, I get the feeling I will be running into a boss pretty soon, so any tips you have will be appreciated! Andy

Andy, for augmentations I've got lots of hacking abilities, I have the jump and cloaking abilities, I have a level in sound damping, I've maxed out the energy cell regen aug, and I have one that allows me to keep my aim straight (not sure which one it is). Honestly, I'm not keeping track. I just sneak up behind everyone, so combat abilities aren't important. What is important is having enough food bars and enough stun darts. Next game through I won't bother with most of the weapons. What has been useful is the stun gun, the stun gun, the stun gun, the stun gun again, and -- in cases of dire need -- the machine pistol, with a little help from gas grenades.
I think I'm quite ready for another adventure.

Lindy,The generalized way to do this would be to open your Windows Explore and then select the drive the game is installed on. In the upper right hand corner, you will see a search field. Then type in *Dues Ex* and hit enter. That should find any and all files and folders pertaining to Dues Ex on that drive. Right Click on the Dues Ex folder and select "Open in new window." Then find the save folder. If you want to you can copy the save files to a different location for safety. Then delete the unwanted saves from the save file. I hope this helps.

Whew - I just defeated Yelena, and I got to say that that was one hard fight! I am playing in the stealth manner this time through, but there was no sneaking my way past this boss, and I was almost at the point, after about 20 tries, of trying to get a cheat past this fight, when a combination of a few things (I think frag mine, stun gun, and heavy rifle) did the trick. I read up on this fight in the Steam forum, and it appears a LOT of people had trouble in this fight, so I didn't feel too inept. But now I'm really glad to return to sneaking and stealing. I felt very underpowered and under-armored for this fight! Still, a really fun game! Andy

Andy, if you get the typhoon ability and some ammo for it boss fights are much much easier. It means to kill the boss but there are not many options.
