Are you a fan of the Myst series?

In this editorial I define the essence of Myst, and then go on to describe a handful of casual games with Myst-like elements -- games that might provide stop-gap pleasure for anyone who's missing Myst.

:)Thanks, Becky, for a clever and well thought out article. As one who has played all five MYST games several times, it was nice to read something that doesn't take potshots at those games. My only complaint is that you mentioned at least three games I never heard about and I now need them. I fear I must grab my trusty credit card and go internet-shopping.

Thanks, Becky, for your informative article. I've been playing casual games lately since I can't seem to find any adventure games that catch--and hold--my attention these days.
I've played a couple of the casual games you mentioned; I will look for the others!

Thanks Becky for an interesting & thought-provoking editorial. Having played 3 of the games I'm tempted to buy the other 3 mentioned!
I've never had enough time to invest to progress through the Myst worlds but love the environments & atmosphere. It would be great to have some easier casual games developed specifically for Myst fans & dunces like me! smile

Thanks Becky, I to, started this whole adventure game thing with Myst.

Thought provoking things here. Some of those games you mentioned, I will play. I have enjoyed
some of the casual games, but the immersion factor
is not like Myst.

Could be a nostalgic thing.

I have been on a older adventure game time late'ly, with an older computer.

What I find with the older games most ,is the story writing.

Thanks Dunn wave

Nice article Becky and I'm so grateful for the suggestions as well! I've been missing Myst myself on and off over the years, and wishing that Cyan were still making games. Maybe a taste of these will satisfy me---for now. wink

PS I was just playing one of the earlier Dream Chronicle games the other day and thinking to myself how the graphics reminded me of Myst. I'm so glad that there are more of these games because there is just something magical about them. (Makes me wonder if some game makers have been inspired by Myst as they made these beautiful little games?) sigh.... smile

thumbsupKaki's sister; Both those games (The Chosen Child & Air) are out on a single disk. I just got them as a gift.. Now if they would release the newest AZADA on a disk, the world would be a better place.

Kaki's sister,

I bought the disc at Amazon. They are showing 3 left in stock at the moment. It ships and sold by 1st video for $14.89 + shipping.

Thank you Becky ! A very well written Editorial ! urock

I have seen these games in the past and past them by - I don't know why I did ( probably because I don't like hidden object games ) But thank you for bringing them back into my limelight!

I just bought Pahelika: Revelations and Hidden Expedition - Devil's Triangle - I'll give it a try. thumbsup

Thanks everyone for the comments and for trying something different by playing these games!

I'm curious as to whether people think the games mentioned in the editorial are Myst-like enough to somewhat scratch the Myst itch, or if the gameplay is too different to accomplish that goal.

Becky,
I played Pahelika: Secret Legends before you wrote this article. As I was in the early part of the game I kept thinking that something was different about this game, being first-person, looking around and examining things and then the lightbulb went off: it reminded me a little of Myst! So I certainly understand what you mean.

I've bought the second Pahelika but haven't started it yet; now I can't wait!

Becky -

I shot through Devil's Triangle - it was a little too hidden object heavy for me to think of it as a Myst-like game (yes - I knew it might be from the title lol ) but at a cost of $2.99 - it was a diversion.

I've had both Pahelika games for a while - and now I can't wait to get into them either. From what I've seen and read on the web, they definitely look Myst-like enough for me. yay

I've seen the others some time ago - I am going to have to take a closer look now. thumbsup

Mary -- that's great! grin

Sureshot -- Congratulations on shooting through Devil's Triangle (I was considerably slower than that). Thanks for you opinion, and I'll be interested in what you think of the Pahelikas. wave

Becky !

The Pahelikas were right on target for me. I like them a lot and these are the type of games I like to see. I thank you again for the leads. thumbsup

I took me a while to respond to you - with the warm weather, it's boating time and I try to get outside a lot ! But - I will check out the other games in your editorial - I have to ! lol

Becky,
I'm playing Azada in Libro right now and I'm loving it! It has puzzles that are not the same old puzzles you see in casual games all the time, but puzzles that make you sit and ponder for a few moments---but are certainly doable. I have not skipped any yet.
I'm so glad you suggested playing this game but I've got a basket full of clean, waiting-to-be-folded clothes that I can't seem to find time to get to!
What a good feeling to be immersed in a game again. The fact that it's basically first-person helps a LOT! thumbsup
