Below are descriptions of famous or decisive military battles throughout history. Give the name of the battle as it is commonly known.

-1. This battle, Operation Phantom Fury, carried out by the I MEF involved heavy fighting house-to-house to clear this city's stranglehold by insurgents, and is now included on the Marine Corps War Monument's list of notable battles in Washington, DC.

-2. This battle lingered for 1 1/2 years, inflicting terrific civilian as well as military casualties. The Russians employed a technique called "hugging" the Germans, keeping the front line as close to them as possible, to limit the Germans' use of artillery and air support.

-3. In this battle, the North surprised the South Vietnamese and American forces in simultaneous attacks in many parts of Vietnam during an annual holiday. Many of the attackers disguised themselves as holiday celebrators.

-4. This battle produced the highest number of casualties in the Civil War. However, if the South had been victorious, it likely would've been recognized as a country by France and England, and been able to break the Union blockade, placing it in a more favorable position.

-5. In this naval battle during the Napoleonic Wars, the victor used the unorthodox tactic of directing his smaller fleet in two columns perpendicular to the larger enemy, instead of the usual parallel line-by-line confrontation used at the time.

-6. This battle was decided, in part, because the English longbows kept the French too far away from using their crossbows effectively.

-7. This battle, the largest amphibious assault in the Pacific in WWII, would have been a prelude to invasion of the Japanese mainland if the atomic bomb had not dropped.

-8. This five day battle was notable for the debut of the tank, a young Adolf Hitler being wounded, and the tremendous casualties inflicted on all sides, leading one observer to conclude that the Allies' six mile gain had cost "two men per centimeter".

-9. This battle started over Edward the Confessor's lack of children, and indecisiveness or skulduggery as to who should succeed him.

-10. This battle was decisive because despite Colonel Travis' pleas for assistance from other states, fewer than 50 reinforcements came to his aid.

Aight, I'm gonna go to my parents for Mother's day, and they have a 56K modem, so I better drop some hints now.

#2. It was cold, cold, cold. Did I mention cold?

#5. The victorious commander was mortally wounded in the battle, and some of his last words were "Thank God I have done my duty".

True! Good answer, Dor. smile

And personally, I think Colonel Fannin was a total scumbag for not sending reinforcements, then lying about it. Why Houston named a street after him I'll never know. It's a good thing he redeemed himself at the Battle of San Jacinto.

But I'm not bitter... rolleyes

It's true that Midway was the largest naval battle in the Pacific, but it came shortly after Pearl Harbor. I'm thinking later just before Enola Gay, and an amphibious assault. wink

Try again, Cue! headscratch

You're getting closer, but it was after Iwo Jima. This island was closer to mainland Japan.

Awesome, both of you! bravo bravo

Though the Battle of the Somme was somewhat intended to draw German troops away from intense fighting in Verdun, the casualties ended up being higher in the Somme, close to 1.2M in just 5 days. The new tank only went 3mph and often got stuck in bomb craters. Adolf Hitler was wounded in the leg, but unfortunately for many, survived.

Though many Americans are unaware of the significance of the Battle of Fallujah, it was one of most significant conflicts of the Iraq War. It was the bloodiest battle American troops had been involved in since the Vietnam War, and the bloodiest battle of the Iraq War. Allied casualties were 720 killed or wounded. Unfortunately their goal of capturing Abu Masab Al-Zarqawi wasn't realized.
