I may have to load mine up too - it's been at least 2 years since I played it! I never used the yellow thing as it was too distracting for me. I know in the beginning it was pretty simple with 2 or 3 swings, then a slight pause and another 2 or 3 swings, then a final slash. But, I just don't remember for sure. I do remember that I grew to love the combat system because it was a bit more nuanced than just hacking and slashing away.

Hi maggie I also had a hard time with the combat in The Witcher (1), untill I remembered reading something about the combos you can perform with your sword. You do know that you can press spacebar to pause the game? And then select one of the three attack types... As for the combat itself, the trick is to press the button (the mouse) just after it turns yellow. And then let Geralt do his thing, e.g. fight. And when the sword turns yellow again, repeating is your friend. Also, remember that the steel sword is for normal enemies and silver sword is for monsters. I needed a few levels under my belt before the sword turns yellow a lot more...

John, What is a swing indicater, never heard of that, and when I used the space bar not much happened of course. Karsten I am having trorble repeating when it turns yellow, as it seems to have a mind of it own and does not do it alot? I also love the game, I did learn last night not to update it all the way, for some reason either my computer or my anti-virus does not like that and it kept kicking me off, so I did not update it at all. So it should be fine by now. I am going to try again, take the books into the living room and read them from front to back. Drac I also remember it being so much easier, could it be my age I wonder, it has not been so long?? Thanks all and I will let you know how many battle scars I wind up with. maggie

I tried installing it on my Windows 8 drive, but found you can no longer install and register from the original disk which is what I have. Grrr... I have a free download of it from GOG on my shelf, so I'm downloading it, but it will probably take at least overnight as my ISP is quite speedy for about 70 MB and then they throttle me down to about 60 Kbps. Another Grrrr... The file is well over 8 GB.

Drac, Oh, you did not have to download it just for me, unless you are going to play it to. So you have Windows 8? I still have Windows Vista, I asked my tech about it and he said no, not to get it, he said not because it is bad, mostly because of my eyes, I have to sit further back then most people and I understamd you have a touch screen with it. How is it? I really should get a lap top, as my sister has the same problem but she has a special table to put hers on so it is really is not on her lap. I told you that I got tossed off The Witcher last night, well, it does not like the update, so I put it back on today and did not update it at all. It has been so hot this summer in Arizona, many days of 115, we have lived here since 1980 and right now I could use about 2 ft. of snow. Maggie

No, you don't have to use a touch screen with Windows 8. I'm using it just like I normally have with XP and Windows 7 with a mouse and keyboard. It has two "interfaces." One you can use with a touch screen or keyboard and mouse and the other one looks and behaves just like a normal desktop. I do agree with your tech though - if your Vista computer is working for you, there is no need to upgrade. Yes, it's all your fault that I'm downloading The Witcher! No, really, I've thought that I should, but didn't because I assumed my original disk would work. Now that I know the disk won't work, I'm biting the bullet and doing the download from GOG. Thank you for the push!

I have the original Witcher DVD that came out in - was it 2009? I downloaded the Enhanced Witcher update back then and burned it to a disk and have installed it a couple of times since then, but probably not for at least a year. This time it installed, but when I went to register it, I could not log in or even create a new account to register it. And the Enhanced update will not install unless it's registered. So, I went to the Witcher website and buried in the FAQs I found that if you have the original DVD, you cannot register it any more. Then it offered the download. I already had the Enhanced Witcher download available as a Freebie on my GOG shelf, so I just started it up.

Sharon, if you have the enhanced version of the DVD, it will probably work. I happen to have the original DVD... the whole thing kind of ticked me off since they assume I WANT to take two days to download over 8 GB. Hang on to that enhanced version DVD, Maggie!

I might add that if you get the new gog version, for whatever reason, it is now the directors cut. There is not a big difference but it does have some additional content which explains the storyline a little better.

Finally got my download completed and the game installed. Maggie, the sword itself doesn't turn yellow; it's the arc of the sword during a swing. What I've found is that you first click on your enemy and then left click again to start combat. It seems like Geralt takes 3 swings and on the 3rd one, the arc of the sword turns yellow and you quickly left click again. Again on the next group of swings on the 3rd swing the arc turns yellow and you left click again. It's a rhythm you will quickly get used to. I'd forgotten how much I like this combat system.
