Fred Pope played the bull.
Jill Hornet played the horse.

Phew, normally I always make some mistake along the way, but I think I got this one.

Fred either played the horse or the bull.

Scenario A: Fred plays the horse. Not possible because if Jill would be called Hornet, she couldn't be the bull.

Scenario B: Fred plays the bull. Jill is called Hornet and she plays the horse. Sandy plays the bat.

And so on, I can't remember what my next step was, maybe someone else can?
