First question is what is your budget? The other question is if she will be comfortable learning to use Windows 8.1? A new HP computer will have Windows 8.1 on it and she would have to get one custom built to have Windows 7. Many people absolutely love Windows 8.1 and many people also don't like it. What OS is she using now?

Windows 7 would be a fairly easy learning curve from Vista, but Windows 8.1 is a whole new experience. I would recommend spending a little time here to take a look around. While this shows Windows 8.1 being used as a touch OS, it also works well with keyboard and mouse. Windows 8.1 If she thinks she would like to go that route and has a preference for HP, they really don't have much that is priced that low. This is the page for desktops in that price range. HP Desktops $400 - $599

Where is she looking at this computer? It isn't listed on the HP website. Hopefully, Inland will know more about that AMD A10 processor and video chip... I saw a Pavillion at the HP website which had an Intel Core i5 3470 processor with the Intel 2500 graphics for $599. The 2500 graphics will be fine for most casual games and hit and miss with anything more than that. I just don't know anything about the AMD. You don't need 12 GB of RAM for her usage... 8 GB is more than enough. EDIT: Ah, maybe it's this one... Envy 700-056 If that's it, and Inland thinks that processor and graphics chip is OK, then that is a good deal. It's going to be loaded with a major boatload of bloatware though. Pretty common...
