I am trying to backup my hard drive to media.....But every time I put in a DVD RW into the drive it pops out, with a message..... " writable media is not supported..

What other kind is there ?

DVD+R or DVD-R should work so long as you have a burner.

Darleen, if you're wanting to get files from you XP to put on your new computer, the easiest way is to use Windows Easy Transfer.

You can read more here... You would have to download for XP, but Windows 7 already has it as part of the OS. Depending on how much data you have, you might need something like an exterior HD or larger capacity USB flash drive.

Yes, you have to download it for XP. I've used it to transfer files and email etc. from XP computers to Windows 7 at least half a dozen times. It has worked perfectly every time.

You used the Windows built-in tool? Why don't you use a third-party tool like aomei backupper?
Usually, using a third-party tool is more efficient and easy
