Here tis - game recommendation time.
The purpose of this thread is to compile a list of recommended games that those of us who haven’t played every adventure game can use to help determine what to play next. I first came to Gameboomers to get information on what games were out there and which of them were worth playing, and it is still a popular topic on the discussion board. Hopefully this list will help provide that information, based on the collective wisdom of us all.
It is not strictly a favourites list, although most of your recommendations will be your favourite games. The critical thing is whether you would recommend it to someone who asked “please give me a list of good adventure games to play”.
Tastes differ, so the list will cover all types of adventure games. The final list will be linked to reviews, so that someone who knows they like Tex Murphy can use the reviews to find similar games from the list. It will also be linked to a walkthru.
I will do a numerical list and an alphabetical list like last year, and with help from the Mac-ers it will indicate which games can be played on their tangerine machines.
The list is for adventure games, and without getting into definitions I think we know one when we see one.
Rules are simple:

1. You can recommend a maximum 15 games (you can of course recommend less)
2. You cannot recommend a series with a single recommendation (if you want to recommend all the Tex Murphy games, you will need to list them separately).
3. Myst and RealMyst will be treated as being the same game.

We will keep the thread open for 3 weeks, and I will provide intermittent updates.
So without further ado, here is my list:

Riven
The Longest Journey
GK2; The Beast Within
Myst III: Exile
Morpheus
Byzantine
Zork Nemesis
Faust
Ring
Dracula; The Last Sanctuary
Outcast
The Neverhood
Black Dahlia
The Dark Eye
Blackstone Chronicles

Have fun

Atlantis: The Lost Tales
Exile
Indiana Jones and the Fates of Atlantis
Jewels of the Oracle
Lighthouse
Monkey Island: Revenge of LeChuck (I think)
realMyst
Return to Zork
Riven

I had alot of problems trying to narrow my list to 15 games so I decided to not list older games that don't meet todays graphic standards. In case anybody out there is into older classic games I would suggest Space Quest 1 The Sarien Encounter,SQ2 Vohauls Revenge,SQ3 Pirates of Pestulon,Kings Quest 2 Romancing the Throne,KQ4 Perils of Rosella, and Zac McCracken and the Alien Mindbenders. I also want to mention the games that couldn't make my top 15 but deserve mention SQ4 Roger Wilco and the Time Rippers,Dracula The Last Sanctuary,Sanitarium,Grim Fandango,Riddle of Master Lu,and The Dig. Well here are my selections:
1.Secret of Monkey Island
2.Monkey Island 2 LeChucks Revenge
3.Curse of Monkey Island
4.Gabriel Knight 2 The Beast Within
5.Discworld
6.Discworld 2 Mortality Bytes
7.Simon the Sorcerer
8.Simon the Sorcerer 2 The Lion,The Wizard,and the Wardrobe
9.The Longest Journey
10.Kings Quest 7 The Princeless Bride
11.Maniac Mansion 2 Day of the Tentacle
12.Broken Sword Circle of Blood
13.Legend of Kyrandia Book 1
14.Fable
15.Space Quest 5 The Next Mutation

I also wanted to point out that alot of these great games are available from the online game stores for under $10.

No particular order as it would be hard with some of these to rate one above the other.

Black Dahlia
Sanitarium
Tex murphy Pandora Directive
Under a Killing Moon
Overseer

Gabriel Knight: Beast Within
Sins of the Father

Zork: Return to Zork
Nemesis
Grand Inquisitor

Phantasmagoria and Phantas. 2 Puzzle of the Flesh.
Ripper
Noctropolis ( might be really hard to find and straight DOS game but worth the attempt, really good)

Blackstone Chronicles

So far Faust and both Broken Sword games (Circle of Blood and Smoking Mirror)look really good but as I haven't finished them I'm hesitant to add to list.

Hi there,
Over 100 games mentioned already, with almost 30 of them not being on last years list. Some of those are obviously new releases, but "non-new" ones include Rent a Hero, Fable, Secrets of the Luxor, Noctropolis, Dark Seed and Twinsens Odyssey.
Most recommended so far is The Longest Journey, with Myst, Riven and GK2 close behind.
I am away with work this week so will post the next up-date next weekend.

Gawd this is hard... I simplified the series dilemma by picking IMHO the best of the bunch - figuring if you play one - you'll seek out the rest (I did)

Sigh _ I hate limits

In no order of preference

1. GK2 - The Beast Within
2. Atlantis 2
3. Journeyman 3
4. The Dig
5. Curse of Monkey Island
6. The Longest Journey
7. Grim Fandango
8. S. Holmes: The Case of The Rose Tattoo
9. Black Dahlia
10. Pandora Directive
11. Zork Grand Inquisitor
12. Circle of Blood/ BS 1
13. Outcast
14. Spycraft (great realism game)
15. Exile (what was I thinking of - I left this off)

I haven't (yet) played 15 games I'd recommend, maybe next year? I do have some of your recommendations on my shelves Anyway, here's my list in alphabetical order:

Day of the Tentacle
Myst
Obsidian (haven't finished playing yet but I'll still recommend it)
Riven
Simon the Sorcerer
Simon the Sorcerer 2
Zork Grand Inquisitor
Zork Nemesis

Wouldn't it be interesting to make a list with all the games we'd never ever recommend to our worst enemys?

These are the some of the ones that stick in my memory, even though I haven’t played some of them in ten years. There are many other worthy candidates mentioned in other’s lists, and some yet unmentioned that I haven’t completed yet.

1. Broken Sword : Circle of Blood
2. Byzantine: The Betrayal
3. The Dig
4. Gabriel Knight: Sins of the Fathers
5. Gabriel Knight: The Beast Within
6. Gabriel Knight: Blood of the Sacred, Blood of the Damned
7. Grim Fandango This one made me upgrade my video card and buy a new joystick.
8. Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis I played the floppy version. The CD version talks now.
9. The Journeyman Project 3: Legacy of Time
10. The Longest Journey
11. Monkey Island, The Secret of My first adventure game. Although dated, it will always have an honored space on my game shelf.
12. Tex Murphy: Under a Killing Moon I bought a new computer to play this one. It was worth it.
13. Tex Murphy: The Pandora Directive
14. Tex Murphy: OverSeer The first DVD game I know of.
15. Torrin’s Passage

The Tex games are my favorites of all time. I’m also pleased to see that many of the games in my To Play Pile (I’m only a semi-BAAGer, about 25) are somewhere in these lists. It will be interesting to see what the list looks like next year.

I had to defer posting my list of 15 top games until I had a chance to do enough of MYST EXILE to know whether it would get in the list. Yes, although I have only completed the Voltaic Age, I am sure that it would make it. Since only the presence or absence on the list counts, i.e., no weighting as to order of merit, I will list them alphabetically.

BLACK DAHLIA
BLACKSTONE CHRONICLES
BYZANTINE
CYDONIA
FAUST
MYST
MYST EXILE
OBSIDIAN
RAMA
REAH
RING
RIVEN
SHIVERS
TIMELAPSE
ZORK NEMESIS

Ah, it is hard to stop there. The trouble is, I have enjoyed almost all the games that I have played, thanks to taking advantage of the recommendations of knowledgeable Boomers. Thank you kindly!

Hi,
Allowing for a small margin for errors, there are 138 games recommended so far.
48 have at least 5 recommendations,, 18 have at least 10 recommendations, 10 have at least 15, and The Longest Journey, GK 2 and Myst all have 20 or more.
As an indication of the eclectic nature of the list, 58 games have a single recommendation.

Well, I haven't played that many games, but out of those I've played the ones I would definitely recommend are:

1) Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis
2) Broken Sword 1
3) Broken Sword 2
4) Monkey Island 1 (and probably the others, but I haven't played them yet!)
5) The Dig
6) GK1
7) GK2
8) GK3

And that's probably it: I have played other games which I enjoyed, but they weren't nearly as good as the ones above - and I suspect there are many games out there which I haven't played which I would have enjoyed more than the ones I have played but not listed here ... if you seee what I mean...

The Pandora Directive
Dracula:The Last Sanctuary
Obsidian
Simon the Sorcerer 1
Simon the Sorcerer 2

WOW! Is all I have to say!

I already did my list of recommendations a long time ago. I keep looking back at the updated post and find games recommended that I have never even heard of. Can anybody tell what Day of the Tentacle is about? It sounds interesting.

Mac Day of the Tentacle is Maniac Mansion 2 and is a crazy cartoonish style game. Very funny with excellent puzzles. At http://gamesdomain.com/gdreview/review_archives.html there is a great review of the game.

Hello flotsam ! Hello dear adventure gamers !

I also have make a little list with adventure game recommendations and hope that I can help a little bit in this way get a big and great collecton from recommendations :

Now here they are :

Adventure Game Recommendations 2001 from Moe Perry :

1.) : The Dark Eye ( my personal secret tip , with the deep , strange voice from William S. Bourroughs and real mystic atmosphere : you can read and hear thoughts from people if you lead the mouse over the forehead , after a story by Edgar Allen Poe ! )

2.): Myst 3 ( I have not finished the game , but it is wunderfull to play and makes me even more happier then Riven )

3.): Riven

4.): U.F.O.'s ( Gnap : the sweet bandit alien from out of space is really cool )

5.): Armed & Delirious ( the craziest grandmother in the whole universe )

6.): Stuipid Invaders ( very silly but with a nice sence of humor )

7.): The Feeble Files ( as Floyd would say here if he could read this tread : " have a good orbit , citizin "

8.): Necronomicon

9.): Dracula ( both parts )

10.): Amerzone

11.): Ring

12.): Atlantis ( both parts )

13.): The Final Curse

14.): Grim Fandango

15.): Escape from Monkey Island ( part 4 )

And now here is the most important point for me from a good adventure game :

Totally free 360 degrees turns ( like in Real Myst : pressure and hold down the left mouse button you go forwards : that was a great gameplay and sometimes I feel like I am flying through the Myst island )

Finnaly here comes a secreenshot from my all time favorite adventure game that i have ever played :

Guess what it is ? :

Oh yes you are quiet right :

Of course it is REAL MYST

Friendly greetings from

Moe Perry

P.S 1.: Dear flotsam : Do you will put the results form the recommendations collecton at some time anywhere in the world wide web online ? And if it is so can you plaese mail me or post the url from your results here on GAMEBOOMERS ?

I am really curious about the results and I think it is a great and fine idea from you !

P.S. 2 :

I juist become an link idea that I will give to all adventure gamers here :

Here is one link to an interesting adventure archiv with over 600 adventure games :

http://www.adventure-archiv.de/

It is a german website and I visit dailly this page , because there are lot of infos and good short discriptons of the games : what is good if you have to search fast for an certain game and has wunderfull screenshots there .

You can also read the whole adventure archiv in the english language on this link :

http://www.adventure-archiv.de/startenglish.htm

And please don

Hi there,
We are halfway through the alloted time period. If you are holding off to finish a game to see if it qualifies for your list, you have about 10 days left

Here they are:

Nightlong
Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atalantis
Bureau 13
Alone in the Dark 2
Callahan's
Neverhood
Kyrandia 1
Noctropolis
Woodruff & the Schnibble
Innocent Until Caught
Space Quest 6
Beneath a Steel Sky
The Dig
Sam & Max
Ween: The Prophecy

I just noticed that all of mine are 3rd person, 2D animated games (or was The Prophecy 1st person?). A good story with interesting characters and logic based puzzles make these games among the best (IMHO). We still haven't played Discworld, Monkey Island, Tex Murphy, etc. etc. - maybe next time they'll be on my list.

Well since I've played a few new games since last year and now grouping a series isn't allowed my list is a little bit different than the last one.

I am surprised with all the new games I did play this last year that some of them didn't make it to my list, as they seemed to be faves of quite a few other boomers here.

Here goes:
Thief Gold
Black Dahlia
Myst Exile
Real Myst
Beyond Atlantis
Goblins 3(the third one)
Ripper
Obsidian
Ring
Shivers 2(the second one)
Drakan
Zork 1(the first one)
Zork TGI
Dracula the Ressurection
Blade Runner

I'm not as big a gamer as most people here. I have many unfinished games which I can't recommend, because I haven't finished, but I have a few that are favorites and some others I've enjoyed.

Myst/realMyst (definitely realMyst if your machine meets the specs)
Riven
Myst III: Exile

I also liked:
Journeyman 3: Legacy of Time
Riddle of the Sphinx
Aztec: The Sacred Amulet
Timelapse

Can't think of any more...

I think I am the only person in the entire universe who liked THE QUIVERING enough to include it in their best of. What a shame.

Hi there,
The final lists appear below. The linking one will come later.
There is a numerical list, and an alphabetical list. An asterix in the alphabetical list indicates it is available for Mac - thanks to MacDee for that info.
I tried to use complete names where I could, and have listed alternative titles where relevant. I took a few liberties with the names in the alphabetical list in order to get sequels and series together (eg Myst 2). In the numerical list however the games are as I understand their correct title to be.
I have listed every game recommended, although I suspect a few would not be classed as adventure. The only games I did not list were recommendations outside the rules.
All errors are my own, but are hopefully extremely minimal.
Nearly 100 members posted recommendations, and just over 170 games were recommended. The top game received 51 recommendations, which meant 1 in every 2 persons had it in their 15 recommended games.
The top game was a bit of a surprise. I knew it would do well, but I would not have picked it at the start as ending up on top.
Finally, as I said last year, every game here is one which at least one person thought was among the 15 they would recommend out of all the games they have played. Allowing for tastes, that means there are no duds, and it will be a long time before I run out of good games to play

flotsam

ps - apologies for the formatting. That too is my fault. I just couldn't master the UBB codes

Well done!!
Thank you so much Flotsam! It must have taken a long time to to make this very good compilation.
As I have high opinion of my fellow-gamers' taste (at least in adventure games) I will consult this very often, before I buy or play a game.
Love, Christina
