Interesting new gameplay twist in store for the second Whispered World. No inventory based puzzles in Silence: The Whispered World 2. The game is scheduled to be released early 2015. Check out the screenshots here. Here is the translated press release until the English one is released. Hamburg, 19 March 2014
Daedalic Entertainment , German publisher known for its adventure games prepared following Sadwick Chronicles: The Whispered World released in 2010 . Fans of the first episode will find the sad little clown Sadwick, which this time has grown to become the young Noah ... Focus on Game Design Game - Testimony Wanitschke Ulrich 's: " To give life after the famous Chronicles Sadwick we wanted to explore new features of design. That's the saddest thing I heard about an adventure game in a very long time. Replacing inventory puzzles with MECHANICAL puzzles is not interesting, it's disgusting. My guess is Daedalic thinks that will attract more players than their classic point and click games?
I hope the game sells very poorly. That will steer Daedalic back to their senses. Otherwise that's the only garbage we'll get from them.

It wouldn't surprise me if the lack of inventory-based puzzles was related to the switch to a 3D engine. To me, "mechanical puzzles" means something like the puzzles in Myst, Riven, Exile, Schizm, etc. But I suspect "mechanical puzzles" may mean something else in this game -- something that was doable with their new game engine. The experience will be more instinctive because there will be no more inventory that characterized the genre of Point & Click system previously. I don't believe there are many gamers that think the puzzles in Myst and Riven were more "instinctive" than the puzzles in inventory-based games. It's true that some inventory-based puzzles could be highly illogical, and solvable only by "try everything on everything." But not all inventory-based puzzles are that way, and the illogicality has nothing to do with being inventory-based. You can certainly have illogical mechanical puzzles. I'll probably try the game if it comes to GOG or DotEMU or ShinyLoot. But I don't have much hope that the puzzles will be anything like the ones in Myst, Riven, Exile, Schizm, Obsidian, or other noteworthy games that had mechanical puzzles. I'm afraid they'll be casualized instead -- or made more like the puzzles in action/adventures and be timed or dexterity-related.

I really hope they don't add timed/dexterity-related mechanics! I'd be okay with a more casual approach - though not crazy about it - as long as the story is good. I really don't see why they feel the need to do away with inventory entirely, however. Even TellTale's latest games, as simple as they are gameplay-wise, still use inventory. I do hope they keep the mechanic of changing Spot into different forms. That was one of my favorite aspects of the first game.

It wouldn't surprise me if the lack of inventory-based puzzles was related to the switch to a 3D engine. Wow it just gets worse and worse... 3D?? Why? Daedalic were the reincarnation of the 1990s giants, I guess it was too good to last. Really bad news.

I actually think the 3D looks really nice in this game. If you check it out in motion, you may be pleasantly surprised. Like most Daedalic games, this is still one of the more beautiful adventure games I've seen. And I wouldn't be surprised if they continued to make full 2D games as well. I would love another Dark Eye or Edna and Harvey game.
