The next installment in Red Thread Games’ epic saga has finally arrivedCheck out the screens here. Check out the Official website here. Check out the developer video here. OSLO, NORWAY – October 22, 2014 – Red Thread Games today announced its highly anticipated adventure game Dreamfall Chapters has released the first book in the five-part series. Book One of the Kickstarter-funded, episodic story has already been distributed to project backers and is now available for purchase on GOG, the Humble Store, and Steam for PC and Mac as well as on Linux.
“When Kickstarting a game, you want to ensure you’re delivering everything and more for the fans that have backed it,” said Ragnar Tørnquist, founder and producer at Red Thread Games. “We wouldn’t be where we are now without our community and it’s because of them that we’ve been able to continue creating the game and story that we’ve dreamed of delivering all of these years.”
Dreamfall Chapters is a story-driven adventure game, the long-awaited episodic follow-up to the award-winning and bestselling adventure games, The Longest Journey and Dreamfall: The Longest Journey. Inspired by the events of the previous Dreamfall games, the plot follows three characters on their journeys across two worlds — one a cyberpunk vision of the future, the other a magical fantasy world — as their stories and destinies intertwine. Book One, entitled “Reborn,” will feature a prologue, chapters one and two and an interlude.
In game, players will explore fantastic locations and mature themes through the eyes of familiar faces, determining the course of their journeys through their choices and actions, and living with the surprising and sometimes devastating consequences. Every decision made within the game will have a significant impact on the way the story plays out. The game’s innovative social system gives players the option to see what decisions their friends made, before they make and share their own.
Dreamfall Chapters – Book One is available now in the Steam Store, the Humble Store and on GOG for $29.99. The Special Edition is also available for $34.99. The series will continue with Books Two through Five and will be released throughout 2015. Book One is also scheduled for release on PlayStation 4 in early 2015.
Happy Gaming! Ana

Thanks, Ana. Hope it's a good one. A shame to read about the problems some are having with downloading, though.

Thanks, Sly One! I may actually be farther than you are now, ironically. I'm still playing, but I took a quick break just to see if my GOG key was available, and it was. So now I have two keys to make up for the wait. I love the game so far! It plays a lot like Dreamfall without the action scenes and has depth more along the lines of the original TLJ. So a nice combination. And it's probably the most beautiful game I've played. (Keep in mind, this latter point is coming from an adventure game only player, of course. )

Thank you & sorry Ana; I forgot about the no spoilers, I wasn't thinking. Judith I'm 100% positive you are correct. I backed this game based on false promises. Now that I own it and checked to make sure my download works it sits idle on my system. I've discovered the game save system rots, the game controls are lacking, and there is zero regarding a manual. Dreamfall the first is the only game in history that managed to make me visibly angry. Ragnar managed to do the impossible because I do not get angry about computer games. If a game does not satisfy I simply don't play it life is too short to stress about something as unimportant as a computer game. From what I've read and heard he has managed to do it again. The plan is to wait until all chapters are complete and downloaded before my character takes the first step out of "Storytime." As I said life is short and I could care less about what happens to these characters. In the meantime I can play the the Longest Journey over again. The journey without is one not worth taking.

I have played through the 'Book one' - and yes, I am very sorry to suggest NOT to play the game until it is completely done.
The story promises to be great again, of course, - but all the good sides of 'DC' are almost lost with the episodic release, while all its bad sides are already evident. There are too many bugs, the game is not optimised and crashes, etc. And I am rather dissapointed with the graphics - dark and gloomy Storytime, dark and gloomy prison, dark and gloomy Europolis city... And not a sight of the sunny Arcadia.

Wow, I'm baffled at all the negative comments so far. I thought this was absolutely the best game I've played in years, and I've played plenty of great ones. I think the graphics are gorgeous. I think the spoiler mentioned is not all that it appears to be. There is something at the end of the beginning scene and an entire section at the end of the episode that allude to this. The controls were a little hard for me in the beginning, too, but once I realized that when I moved the mouse like a camera, and Zoe (or Kian) would automatically walk in the direction I aimed the mouse, it became a lot easier. Easier than Dreamfall, I'd say where the changing camera angles could happen abruptly. As to the episodic content, I can understand but didn't have that experience. I played for over ten hours before I finished. But then, I was very thorough, looked at everything multiple times to get all the comments, went through all the optional dialogue, explored Europolis thoroughly (it's huge!) and read all the journals. (Zoe's journal is much more reminiscent of April's now, which I'm really enjoying. She's starting to actually match April as a character for me.) Much as I love TellTale's games, their episodes are feeling way too short lately, which is definitely not the experience I'm having with Chapters. Even if the minimal path is taken, it would probably be around 4-5 hours, which is still much more than the average episodic game episode. Zoe and Kian already have much more depth as characters than they did in Dreamfall. (Just listen to all of Kian's comments on the broom. ) There are some fantastic new side characters, particularly in Europolis. There are some performance issues, yes, but they are working to fix them. I think I was lucky because I only experienced lag in two places - Friar's Keep and the psychiatrist's office - but everything else ran smoothly, and I had all the options turned all the way up. The only complaint I have is that I would like the option to make my own saves. I did read on their forums that if you want to go back and take a different path, you can go back to a previous save towards the end of your first playthrough and get all the choices you'd made before. So nothing gets overwritten, which is good. All in all, this is my favorite Kickstarted game by far, and my favorite game period since Culpa Innata (and before that, the original TLJ). I'm looking forward to episode 2!

VRM, the game runs with the WASD keys and the mouse. I mainly just use the W key with the mouse. Great game. Chief

If you didn't like the character in TLJ who swore then you'll find "Dreamfall Chapters" hard to take as Europolis is full of bad language.

I've got it since I helped with their kickstarter campaign, but am reluctant to play it until I get all of the chapters. I would hate playing it and then waiting on tenterhooks for the next installment.
Do any of you who have played it recommend waiting or playing?

It all depends on your tastes. I was perfectly satisfied with episode 1 myself, and in a way I like being "forced" to only play an episode at a time as this is an extra special game for me. I know if I were to get the whole game at once, I would just plow right through it, and it would be over. This way I am forced to take my time. Also, I got about 8 to 10 hours out of it, while others who just wanted to get to the heart of the storyline may have only got three or four. Which is still incredibly long for an episode. The first episode feels very much like it's setting the stage for the larger story. Some people feel that this means it is starting off too slowly. I personally like slow builds, getting to know the characters/world and such, but if this isn't your thing, you may want to wait for another episode or two before you start playing. If you like exploring, world building and character interaction, I say go for it. If you want the plot to really get into gear, I would recommend waiting for at least another episode to come out. Hope that helps at least somewhat.

Well, that helps. I think I'll try to wait. (I hate waiting ) Will see what happens. When I put up some money on kickstarter to help them make the game, I was expecting one big game, not a lot of chapters. Annoying.
