Maybe some Gabriel Knight fans would like to see this. I've made a post on my blog about my trip to Rennes-le-Chateau and how the real city compares to the virtual version from Gabriel Knight 3. It's titled jokingly "Gabriel Knight, you liar!". Overall, don't treat too seriously my accusations that the game wasn't truthful enough.

I've put in plenty of high resolution photos - you can see where exactly places like Sauniere's church, Villa Bethania, Tour Magdala are located in the real town and how you move from one to another. In a while I'll post also a second part of this feature that will be showcase specifically the church in RLC.

I encourage adventure game fans to visit the game section of my blog regularly. It is dedicated mostly (but not exclusively) to independent, lesser known (also underground) adventure games and various fan initiatives. The contents are pretty small right now, but in the coming weeks I will post plenty of interesting stuff, like reviews for Tale of a Hero, Edna & Harvey and A Second Face, and also some pretty exclusive interviews (I won't reveal with whom yet smile ).

lol Well, the places there are beautiful, even if not perfectly accurate in the game. Surprising how annoying that is, isn't it? I find it's even more annoying when you actually live in a place, and then it is inaccurately portrayed in a game (a common problem if you live in New York City).

Very beautiful photos!!! I loved the one with Sauniere’s private chapel. Such colors.... Looks like a very nice place to visit. Thanks for sharing Ascovel! wave

Thank you for posting your photos Ascovel - the place definitely exudes Gabriel Knight 3 & you can see where the inspiration comes from. I put any differences in arrangement down to artistic licence but I do wonder how much the place may have changed througout the years since Gabriel Knight 3 was conceived. I'm looking forward to seeing your pictures of the church! smile

Thanks a lot for all the kind comments. I must say that since I posted this article on my blog yesterday I received responses about other GK fans having made their own photos from RLC. Here's a series I particularly like that was made in 2001 (this is especially of interest for you, chrissie): http://usuarios.lycos.es/RLC2001/

From other changes that happened in the town, I can mention that the cemetery behind the church is closed to the public since several years. Probably some tourists weren't behaving themselves. frown

Thank you Ascovel! They're very interesting photos too - I see that the site of the hotel was very overgrown then just two years after the game came out? The interior of the church looks very similar to the game & the cemetary has an air of familiarity! smile

Thanks for the very interesting travelog. GK3 was one of my favorite games and I'd love to see Rennes-le-Chateau.

One question - did the cat have bald spot where Gabe got his fake moustache?

He obviously underwent a general fur restoration - it had a different color altogether. wink
