Let's wait for a gamer that has played the game to help you with the nuance of this puzzle.
This is what Nickie wrote in her walkthrough: Enter the room and immediately click on the small note that is on the wall to the right of the door. (You can do this as many times as it takes to get the note). (end of flashback)

Did you investigate (not use) the diary in your inventory?
Make sure that you get the comment “he’s running around, further away” while you're listening at the door, before you enter.
