Hi, I recently bought Gabriel Knight 1, 2 and 3 from GOG and downloaded GK1 without any problems. However the graphics are so blocky that it is impossible to make out any details at all, making the game unplayable. Is there a simple remedy? (I say simple because I am a complete ignoramus about the workings\programming of my computer). I have an HP Compaq pc which is a Pentium D CPU 3.20 GHz with 2.00 GB of RAM and use Win XP. TIA.

If ***this*** is what you're seeing (only magnified), that's just the way the game looks. A lot of games from 1993 and earlier look like that (or worse). You can try playing it windowed if you want higher resolution. I believe Alt-Enter toggles windowed and full screen in DOSBox. Hold down the Alt key and press the Enter key.

It's an old game and the graphics were pre-rendered in 640*480 resolution. More like 320x240 or 320x200 I think. Games from the late 1990's used 640x480 and had much better resolution without those great honkin' pixels. Even though the game box for GK1 says it requires VGA 640x480, I'm dubious that that's what the game is displaying.

Thanks for the help. I am seeing something similar to the screenshot you posted Jenny, though slightly less well defined. I played this game when it first came out and remember it's graphics were primitive, but I had no trouble identifying what was on screen. I guess that, apart from my eyes being nearly 20 years older than then, I've just got used to today's sophisticated productions. I'll try playing in a small screen - thanks for the instructions. I tried them out and the picture was much clearer in the smaller size.
