Hi,
Just a thought but.....
I first came here to get some ideas about what to play. Trawled around and found some back posts, found some top 10 lists, and asked some direct questions. As a result, I am still here and have played some good stuff.
Others obviously come here for the same reason. There are often new posts asking for suggestions.
So (and realising that one persons poison is anothers champagne, and that nothing is perfect) I propose we start a thread on which each person can submit a maximum of 10 games that they would recommend others play. If you don't have 10 you would recommend, or haven't played enough, less than 10 is fine - but no more.
The emphasis is on the fact that you are recommending games for others to play. This would eliminate (perhaps) the game which made the earth move for you (for whatever reason) but which whilst it will forever occupy a niche in your favourite games file, you cannot in all honesty recommend it to someone else to play today.
Your 10 would not be in order of priority. Just 10 (or less) recommendations. If you originally post less than 10, but then play one that you have to add, you can do so. But 10 is the maximum.
We could keep the thread open for (say) 28 days (or till the end of this month). It would then be closed, and we could compile a single composite list of the games mentioned, in order of most to least. I am willing to volunteer to do the counting.
Then some clever moderator type person could put the list in the hall of fame or classic posts or somewhere else obvious, to serve as a resource for current and future gamers. It would be date marked, and a new list could be compiled at appropriate intervals to pick up new games.
There would obviously be more than 10 games on the list, and the collected wisdom of everyone here (especially the BAAGs) would give a good snapshot of recommended games at the date indicated. The numbers (and tastes) of people here should ensure a good cross section, and offer another source of info, and a possibly broader opinion than a single review.
We could cut the list off at a certain point down, or discard any games with less than a certain number of mentions, or simply post the whole list. I suggest we cross that bridge at the time but also suggest that we don't ultimately list any game that is only mentioned once.
Finally, we are talking adventure games, and whilst its hard to define, I think we know it when we see it. Its the games we talk about here. Some may have different opinions about whether certain games fit the genre, but at the end of the day if I was to put (say) Quake on my list, I suspect it would reside at the end of the list with just one vote. Under my own rules it would not make the final list and all disputes about whether it was really adventure or not would never arise.
So with some trepidation as a newbie but in (optimistic) anticipation of wild enthusiasm I will kick it off with the list below. I will confess there are many I haven't played that will no doubt make a later list, but you have to start somewhere.
And if this is has all been done before and I missed it, my apologies.

These aren't necessarly my top 10 games but a comprehensive list of games that best exemply the variety of Adventure games that are out there from a
perspective/graphic/challenge/ view. With each IMHO being one of the primier games of it's "kind". Almost a cornerstone list of games, that everyone should play through at least once to see that not every adventure is the same.

Haven't played enough games to have a top ten list, but of what I've played, I would unhesitatingly recommend:

1. Riven -- best of the first-person, "plop you in a strange place and make you figure out what the hell's going on" games. My favorite adventure game to date.

2. Amber: Journeys Beyond -- the only game I've ever played that actually scared me.

3. Last Express -- not a game I really love, but I think anyone interested in adventure games should try this one out. Played completely in real time, it is definitely a unique experience.

I would also recommend, with reservations:

1. Myst -- started me on the genre, so that should say something for it, I guess.

2. Grim Fandango -- the best written, best voice-acted, best thought-out game I ever played, but weakened by a really crummy interface. I consider this a "flawed classic".

3. 7th Guest -- basically a puzzle game in adventure fancy pants, but a good puzzle game.

4. Outcast -- an action adventure game that got me started on THAT genre.

Okay, here goes:

1. Myst/Riven
2. Zork Grand Inquisitor
3. Morpheus
4. The Curse of Monkey Island
5. The Last Express
6. Timelapse
7. The Legend of Lotus Spring
8. Amerzone
9. Ring
10. Reah

I'm currently playing Atlantis II, and unless the game suddenly loses all its remarkable heart and depth, it will end up high on my list.

Re: mostly older games making the lists: to some extent this is natural, because we've had more time to play older games. And I think there can be a nostalgic haze surrounding a person's first few immersive interactive experiences. (For instance, I find that the music from Myst affects me in the same way Golden Oldie songs from my teenage years do -- I don't just remember the song, but I remember what I was looking at and what I was feeling at the time.)

It's also easier to recognize a classic when you've had time to think about the game/book/painting, and put it in perspective, perhaps even to play/read/look at it more than once. This may explain in part why we seem to be favoring older games, but I don't think it explains the whole.

Hi,
Thanks for the encouragement MacDee.
Sad though I am not so sure about. Becky is right in that more of us will have played them, and I assume we will have played them because we have heard good things about them. The circle continues.
I suspect that newer games (like TLJ perhaps) will get more recommendations as time goes by. I haven't played it yet so it can't make my list. That is why I think doing this periodically (every 6 months say) will be both informative and useful. If you do it 4 or 5 times and the older games still come up, then maybe it is sad - or maybe it just says something about what people want to play.
idarcy had a good suggestion re Mac ported games and can the Mac-ers amongst you indicate at the end of the day what games are playable by the Microsoft challenged .

In no order:

Amber
Timelapse
Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis
Myst
Riven
Gabriel Knight/Beast Within
Monkey Island 1 + 2
Shivers

We are playing Obsidian now (hey Janie!) and that will probably make the the list. I know that would only put me up to nine, but the eternal optimist that I am, I want to save a spot for the next really great game that comes along.

My favorites are not necessarily the games I would reccomend to someone else.

I try to tailor my reccomendations the taste of the person who asks.

The games I would most often tell someone about are:

Riven
Broken Sword / Circle of Blood: Shadow of the Templars

Amerzone
Timelapse
Journeyman Project 2
Zork Grand Inquisitor
Full Throttle

for kids:

King's Quest 7: The Princeless Bride
Nile: An Ancient Egyptian Quest

Wow! I used up my ten slots faster than I thought I would.

It's interesting to me how many of us put Amber on our lists. Of course I wasn't gaming when it first came out, but did it really make that much of a hit, or is it just one of those games that people came to slowly appreciate? I just finished it recently, and found it very enjoyable, yet I had never heard of it until someone offered it to me in a trade.

HI, Jenny!

I don't know the stats on how Amber sold when it was first released in 1996. But, I think is popularity has steadily grown since. It probably could be considered a "cult classic" by this time... There are still lots of reviews of Amber on the Web. One such is at http://pc.hotgames.com//games/amberj/review.htm Although, it sounds like the author of this particular review was an action gamer and entirely unfamiliar with adventure games....or already had a firm mindset...LOL

Hi all,
I've only played 6 games one of which (Crystal Key) I wouldn't recommend unless you're desperate. From the quick look I took, it doesn't rate high with many. Here is my list of 5.

Zork Nemesis
Riven
Myst
Amerzone
JP3

Looks like I gotta try Obsidian and Timelapse.

You know, it is hard to get just 10 games, guess I play too much. I can easily put a list of 20.

Here is my list:

Loom (Anyone remember this one?)
Day of the Tentacle
Myst
Callahan's Crosstime Saloon
Neverhood
Circle of Blood
Journeyman Project 2
Zork Grand Inquisitor
Full Throttle
Toonstruck

Here's mine (subject to future additions) in no particular order...

Curse of Monkey Island
Grim Fandango
Discworld II
Nightlong
Normality
Faust
Gabriel Knight II - The Beast Within
Sanitarium
Amerzone
Myst

There's still a lot I haven't played yet (just got Feeble Files and waiting for Longest Journey) but I wouldn't hesitate to recommend any of these to other people, although I admit Normality was a guilty pleasure.

Here goes in no particular order with the exception of "The Quivering" which will solidly perch atop my all time favorites list:

1.The Quivering(a must play for true
adventurers!My all time favorite!)
2.The Arrival (fantastic sci-fi adventure)
3.Tex Murphy series (all)
4.Feeble Files (one of the best ever made)
5.Neverhood (either you love it or hate it)
6.The Longest Journey (Truly wonderful)
7.Grim Fandango (what it's all about)
8.Dracula Resurrection (unbelievable graphics and very spooky)
9.Day of the Tentacle (a real classic)
10.Broken Sword 1 & 2 (can't beat these for true adventuring)

I could add many more, but the list above relates the best of the best. It's too bad we can't list a top 20.
Thanks for the opportunity to do this.
Alan

Hi,
The top 10 is now a top 11 with Shivers equal with Obsidian.
Those that join the list of more then 5 mentions are Sam and Max Hit the Road, Broken Sword 2, and The Neverhood.
As responses are dwindling and people will get sick of me pestering them, what say we end posts at the end of this weekend, and I will do a complete summary.

Yea, yea I know a day late and a dollar short. Here goes and this hasn't been easy narrowing it down to only 10 - this list is subject to change at any time

Myst - the game that hooked me and therefore will always have a place in my heart
Obsidian
Zork Nemesis
JP3
The Longest Journey
Atlantis 2
Callahan's Crosstime Saloon
Bad Mojo
Pandora Directive
Under a Killing Moon

I'm playing Discworld Noir and The Quivering right now and they look like they are going to make it into the top 10 when I'm done. As stated subject to change

After much deliberation and heated discussion here we go in no particular order ...

Discworld series
Simon the Sorcerer series
Monkey Island series
Broken Sword series
(cheat mode off)
Day of the Tentacle
Shivers I
Pandora Directive
Callahans Crosstime Saloon
Riven
Black Dahlia
...
Near misses because they are now a bit dated
Zak MacKracken and the Alien Mind Benders,
Gabriel Knight I and Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis.
Grim Fandango lost out because of the interface!

Rosemary who also loved Blue Ice but wouldn't dare recommend it

  • Amber-Journey's Beyond
  • Black Dahlia
  • Byzantine
  • Gabriel Knight II
  • Lighthouse
  • Morpheus
  • Myst
  • Riven
  • Timelapse
  • Zork Nemesis

There are so many others I could name but these are games that got me hooked on adventure and all have been played more than once.

These are my top 9 in no particular order. This was hard to do. I finally decided on the basis of have I replayed them even when I had new games or old/new games for me to play which I always do.
Myst
Riven
Shivers
Black Dahlia
Timelapse
Last Express
Lighthouse
Zork Nemesis
Grim Fandago

I still have a lot games to go and a whole lot that I want to replay. I am beginning to think one only sees what is in a good game (like a good movie or good book) if one returns to it.

Just got a chance to review all of the latest posts on this thread, and I want to re-iterate what Alan said about The Quivering. EVERYONE on GameBoomers should play this game! Really! I know I have been a minor pain about it, but don't just take my word for it. Go to Alan's site ( http://www.playinggames.bigstep.com/ ), buy it and PLAY it! You will not be sorry.

Here's Randy's review on Just Adventure if you don't believe me: http://www.justadventure.com/reviews/Quivering/Quivering_Review.asp

And here's Ray's take on it, although he was much less forgiving of the notorious 'Save' feature (or should that be the 'Save but that means you won't have enough imps to make it through the next level" feature?):
http://www.adventuregamer.com/reviews/misc/quivering.shtml
Do yourselves a favor. Play The Quivering.

Hi,
Must be all that decadence Rick!
I will post summaries Monday morning my time. That will be late Sunday in the USA. I know you have more than one timezone, but they aren't my strong suit, so I can't get any closer than that.
We can then close the thread.

Just a suggestion, but this thread has only been open 10 ( 11? ) days, maybe you should let it run for another week. There are still many regulars that haven't posted yet. What with schools getting out, Graduations, etc., a lot of people have been quite busy this last week or two.

Hi,
I did suggest till the end of the month in the starting post, and I didn't realise it was only 11 days.
Cos it slowed down, I just assumed everyone had posted that was going to.
At granny's request, and I got some e-mails as well, what say we hold off for another week. I will post summaries next Monday. They are ready to go so I will just up-date them.
In the meantime, idarcy asked for the list to show Mac games. If I e-mail you a list idarcy (and MacDee??) can you e-mail me back the ones that are Mac-ed?

ok, here's mine - I haven't played that many but the ones I would recommend are:

Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis
Broken Sword 1 and 2
GK1
Fatal Illusion (except for bugs)

That's basically all the games that I've played that I would recommend. I wouldn't recommend Feeble Files because, though fun, it was far too hard to even attempt to play without a walkthrough (for me at least!). I also didn't much like Amerzone - the locations and puzzles were too samey. GK2 I haven't finished yet, and so far there has been too much reading, and having to have people read things out loud, which had got me down. By the time I end I might want to recommend it I guess, but not yet. Apart from that, I've just not played lots of the favourites that have been mentioned so far...

Reenie,

Dark Side of the Moon certainly made my list.(See above) One of my all time favs.

BTW, I see some have mentioned 3 Skulls of the Toltecs. I know this is one of Mr. Bill's sleeper hits, but does anyone know where I could buy a copy? Thanks,

Obsidian
Morpheus

Zork Nemesis
Rama
Gabriel Knigh II
Timelapse
Lighthouse

I would just have loved to put "9 - Last Resort on the list", however it isn't an easy game, and maybe not the best to recommend. Rama is also a game not easily recommended, but I was so totaly proud of myself when I finished it (I suck at math), that it had to go on the list, I wish for more people to experience the same kind of joy!

Writing the list was hard, I thought that I've played soooo many games, what to chose and so on. However, reading through the other lists, I realize that there are quite a few games left to discover. I'm going to have to get myself a PC one of these days... [blip].

Great idea with the lists! //emma//

Hi,
A quick update.
We have 105 games on the list and 54 respondents. There are 15 games with more than 10 recommendations, and another 13 with 5 or more.
Thanks to idarcy and macdee, the final lists will be mac friendly.
See you next Monday.

Hi,
Just so as everyone is on the same time line, I will post summaries Monday morning, which is 72 hours from now.
You can work out what that equates to where you are from the the time indicated on this post.

Flotsam -- How hard is it going to be for people hoping to buy some of the highly rated older games to actually find them? I'm thinking in particular of Timelapse and Obsidian, although even Legacy of Time on CD is getting hard to find.

Becky,

If you don't mind them used, you can try www.gametz.com - though most people trade games, some sell them. Always worth a try and you'll find alot of older games available.

Hi,
The summaries of this thread appear below. First you have to suffer through an explanation and a comment.
Some respondents recommended series, or pairs of games, as a single recommendation. Others used separate recommendations for different games in a series.
The most prominent of these (ie recommended more than others) were the Gabriel Knight, Tex Murphy, Broken Sword and Monkey Island series, and the Myst/Riven pairing. Other series included Zork and Journeyman Project.
In consolidating the lists, I had to decide what to do.
If I recorded one vote for each game in the series, this effectively meant more than 10 recommendations for those respondents. It also meant that by comparison, those that recommended separate games in a series got less than 10 votes. An extreme example was Muppet, who used 6 recommendations to vote for 3 GK games, and 3 MI games. Some voted for those same games using 2 recommendations.
If I ignored the series votes, then everyone that recommended a series got less than 10 votes. Further, they might have preferred certain games in the series (or indeed all of them) to remain on their list ahead of other games.
The purest solution would have been to get everyone who voted for a series to re-vote, but this was supposed to be fun, not a trip to the dentist to have teeth pulled.
So, on the basis that everyone here is friends, and as we are recommending games to others not voting on the Nobel prize, I did both.
There are 3 separate list posts below. One is a list with the series votes included, another with them excluded. The third is an alphabetical list of all games indicating both results – if there is a number in brackets after the name, that is the total vote for that game including series votes .
You will see that it did not alter the overall result too much. Myst and Riven remained first and second whichever way you did it, and Timelapse remained third. The top 10 remained pretty much the same, and games with 10 or more votes increased by five. Beyond that in depth analysis, the alphabetical list will show the impact.
I hope this is acceptable to all.
The comment follows separately.

Hi,
The three lists below are the outcome of this thread. The aim was to have adventure players recommend games to other adventure players, or would-be players.
105 games (give or take a Zork) were recommended, and 57 people responded.
It needs to be stressed that ALL the games here were recommended by at least one person as being amongst their top games to play. It is not a list of best to worst games of all time. Tastes will vary, but if a game is on this list, someone thought it was worth recommending to others to play. On that basis, there are no duds.
A more detailed explanation of the “rules” and rationale is at the very first post. The explanation for the three lists appears in the post above this one.
Happy playing.

Hi,
My apologies if the lists are slightly hard to read. All my nice formatting disappeared when I cut and pasted. I will have a play with the editing to see if I can make it a bit less "messy".
